Students and parents who are looking for a thoughtful, ethical and individually responsive elementary trained teacher need look no further! My specialties include elementary math, spelling & vocabulary, all elementary sciences (physical, life, earth, health, technology) and high school biology. I'm currently a retired teacher, and am focusing on the needs of my individual clients. This includes content, assessments (tests, other) and the experiential requirements of the subjects I teach.

Before retirement, my specialty was providing individualized project-based and service-learning experiences in the classroom. To do this successfully, I approached every level of student in a way that met their individual needs; I worked carefully with individuals, groups and whole classes. My teaching experiences include working with 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and I've been trained in a variety of learning techniques that educate the "whole child." After 22 years of public and private school teaching experience, I recognize that every person learns differently. I know how to listen and insist on treating students as developing human beings. It is my strong belief that it takes a village, and I'm an integral part of that village. Ask me what you want or need to learn, and I will work to make it a positive experience that will leave you wanting to learn more!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I have a Standard Elementary Teaching License (4/1/12 - 3/31/17)Pre-primary through Grade 9, and a Grade 5-12 Basic Biology endorsement; I can provide my license number upon request. I have a BS. in Botany and a Master's in Forest Science in addition to my M.A.T., plus 21 years (this June) teaching experience in public and private school with a specialty in the middle school sciences and health. My work in teaching includes life science and environmental science, and I am a Board Member of the Oregon Invasive Species Council.

Drawing

As a person who has received many years of drawing instruction myself, and one who observed many students using this art form to express themselves, I chose to incorporate this skill into multiple settings. My yearbook / newsletter classes used student drawing in their publications for several years of my career. I chose to teach cartooning/drawing as electives (5 different classes) at the middle school level, so students could learn the basic techniques and apply them to projects and subjects of interest to them. I also taught after school drawing/cartooning classes at this level. In all classes that I have taught in (21 years public, 10 years private, concurrently), I'm observant of students' abilities, particularly artistic, and encourage them with suggestions, ideas and materials to enhance their work and presentation of that work.
