Hi students!

My name is Laura, and I look forward to working with you!

My background is in law, and I've spent 25 years working on energy and environmental issues as a lawyer and consultant. I also work as a coordinator for one of the larger foreign exchange programs that brings high school students over to the U.S. for a semester or academic year -- I am responsible for organizing host family applications, placing students in appropriate families, supervising and counseling exchange students between the ages of 15-18.

I not only maintain contact with my students and families, but I know how to be sensitive to cultural differences in communications and behavioral issues common to teenagers. Every student is different! That helps me in working with teens in the classroom setting, too, where for the past four years I have worked with high school students in legal and social studies classes in subjects such as mock trial and constitutional law.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

If you would like to improve your English (grammar, punctuation, writing, vocabulary, etc.) skills, talk to me! I am happy to work with you to improve your skills. I have 25 years of experience writing for business, law, and many different types of publications. I have helped high school and college students with essays and papers, working to improve their writing, presentation, and overall clarity.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a skill I developed years ago while still in college. I have reviewed articles for publication, research papers, congressional testimony, and high school and college research papers. I worked early in my career as an editor for a nationally known legal publication; being accurate in our style, grammar, and punctuation was as much part of our reputation as the content of our articles and court analyses. Pretty much anything that needs to be looked at by someone else for review should be thoroughly proofread before submission; I can help with your documents.

QuickBooks

I have used QuickBooks for many years. It was the program my own company used from the early 1990s to 2007, and when our company was acquired we continued to use QB. For many years I was the primary accounting person responsible for entry; even after that, I was the primary supervisor responsible for ensuring accuracy and consistency. I have not used it consistently in about a year, but when I've talked to colleagues and offered informal assistance it does not appear to have changed.

Reading

Many people say they don't like to read, but it turns out that they just need some additional help to understand the material or develop better reading skills. Once you do that, the wonders of the world will be opened to you!

I have worked with non-native English speakers on their reading, mostly at the high school level. I have worked with my own children on their reading skills, both in school and in a test preparation context for school tests, and PSAT/SAT testing as well.

Vocabulary

I am happy to work with you to improve your vocabulary skills. I have 25 years of experience writing for business, law, and many different types of publications, and have worked with students on research papers, essays, and presentations. It's not just a matter of more words in your vocabulary, it's learning which are the right words.

Writing

If you would like to improve your writing skills, talk to me! Writing well takes time and patience, and I am happy to work with you to improve your skills. I have 25 years of experience writing for business, law, and many different types of publications. My writing has included not only research papers while in college, law school, and graduate school, but also many legal briefs, policy analyses, congressional testimony, newsletters, many articles, and books. I've worked with mostly with high school and college students, and have also worked with adults needing additional help.
