I am an Early Childhood/Elementary education graduate from Western Oregon University. I was a student teacher in the Salem/Keizer School District from September 2011-December 2012. In this program, I created and assessed units of instruction on math,health, and social studies topics.

I am currently a substitute teacher in the Hood River County School District. I am also pursuing my Masters degree and English for Speakers of Other Languages endorsement through the Concordia University Online program.

I have also volunteered on and off in the Hood River County School District from 2006-present, both at Westside Elementary and Mid Valley Elementary. I have worked with students from Kindergarten up to the Fifth grade. My duties consisted of teaching lessons and working with students one-on-one.

I love working with children, and I always tailor my lessons to fit my students needs. Teaching for understanding is very important to me. If I feel a student is not comprehending something, I will reteach the topic until they can demonstrate proficiency. I do like to use assessments as a tool to not only monitor my students' progress but also a guide in planning my lessons.

Vocabulary

I tend to teach vocabulary through exposure. I usually have students learn a knew word by using it in writing or by reading it in text.

I emphasize Dictionary and Thesaurus use in my lessons. If a student discovers an unknown word in their text and asks me to define it, I require them to look it up in a dictionary first before returning to me. This fosters a student's self-reliance and gives them research skills that will be valuable in the future.

Grammar

Grammar is the subject I have the most experience with. This also allows me to teach how to proofread important documents.

Along with grammar and proofreading, I teach students the writing process, how to use an outline, the differences between persuasive, expository, and imaginative papers, and how to give feedback to other writers.

Reading

I like to use the Daily 5 and CAFE methods of teaching reading. CAFE involves the teaching of the core reading skills: Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. Daily 5 is a method I use in order to give my students the opportunity to apply their CAFE skills to authentic literature. Daily 5 consists of 5 activities or stations that a student must complete daily. They are: Read to self, Read to a partner, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work.

Geography

My instruction focuses on map literacy, world cultures, and land formations. In Oregon, children are required to demonstrate map reading skills as a form of literacy.

Elementary Math

I am experienced in teaching problem solving strategies, pre-algebra, long division, multiplication, fractions, time, measurement, and basic addition and subtraction.

I teach students a new math skill and then have them demonstrate their proficiency by completing activities or worksheets. This allows the students to practice what they learn. If they struggle to complete the task, then I know what they still need help working on.

Elementary Science

Biology, Earth science, and physics are my strong suits. I like to incorporate lecture and the scientific method into my teaching because it allows students to think deeper about what they are learning and to actively investigate the world around them.

Social Studies

I have received extensive training on the teaching of Social Studies. In my instruction, I emphasize world cultures, economics, civics, geography, map literacy, history, and government. These are very important subjects for any child to know, especially since these subjects are the first to be cut from many school curricula.
