Hi! My name is Deanna. I have a BA in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo and a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) from the U of O. While in the SLP program, I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of clients of all ages who required assistance in communicating (i.e., speaking, auditory comprehension, reading, and writing) due to an array of disorders. My experiences have included, but are not limited to, working with kids from pre-school to high school who are on the Autism spectrum, kids who are hard of hearing, kiddos who needed help with phonics and the building blocks of reading, helping people develop study skills, and helping to improve auditory and reading comprehension using graphic organizers. Each client was unique, so it was necessary for me to be flexible and really listen to what their needs were in order for me to find a way to teach them the skill they were trying to master. Many of the clients' parents told me I had a real knack for teaching and their child not only learned during our sessions, but actually looked forward to coming.
My undergrad work in biology with a minor in anthropology allowed me to develop both my physical and social science knowledge skills including bio, physics, chemistry, genetics, zoology, and cultural & physical anthro. A part of being a science major is having excellent math skills, so I feel very comfortable teaching pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, logic, and trigonometry, as well as elementary math. Also during my undergrad, my love for animals and interest in physical anthropology led me to travel to Nicaragua and Madagascar to study our non-human primate relatives... howler monkeys and lemurs!
I have always enjoyed helping others in a way that I wasn't just providing them with the answers, but rather in a way that they understood so they too could learn to love the subject that may have previously been their "bug-a-boo." I hope I will have the opportunity to help you or your child find that love of learning.
