My studies at university included Child Growth and Development, mathematics, science, industrial management, Spanish, and French languages. I realized we cannot learn another language if we do not understand our native language.
My first job was teaching in a one room school with all eight grades in the same class. Here I was able to put to use my training in phonics. By the end of the first year the first grade students were able to read at the fourth grade level.
I graduated to a junior high school where I taught basic mathematics and U.S. history. Over the years I came to realize that the most important thing in our beginning education was to read and comprehend what we read. If we can read well, we can teach ourselves anything.
I have traveled and worked in many Countries, published an adventure novel about one of my experiences in life, and am an editor of translated Chinese English for large companies. Coming close to retirement age, I went back to school and acquired a TESOL Certificate for Business English. For the last ten years I have taught students of all ages in China.
Remember, it is more difficult to re-learn if we do not learn correctly the first time. Each person has a different way of learning. Lessons should be geared to the individual.
Part of my University education was Child Growth and Development. This qualified me for teaching elementary and Junior High certificates in California, and Oregon. In later years I earned a TESOL CERTIFICATE TO teach business English.
For the last ten years I have privately taught many classes of various ages to students, business managers, and corporate CEO's in China.
Presently I am an English editor for a Translation Company based in Beijing, China.
I have certificates for ESL, and TESOL, as well as having taught regular school classes for several years. I have spent the last ten years tutoring English to executives and company managers in China, as well as elementary level pupils on a one-to-one basis.
I can speak a little Spanish, French, and Chinese.
Grammar separates the classes. However, In my view, Grammar has no place at the beginning of learning a language. After learning to listen, the work is directed to speaking. When we have learned how to listen and pronounce the sounds correctly we can learn to read. As we read we can see how proper formation of the sentence is done. Grammar is last. After all, we do not speak in grammar to get our initial ideas across in our meaning. Vocabulary is built as we progress, and the words learned are in the context of an individuals requirements. The bottom line is, if we can learn to read well, we can teach ourselves anything.
When I went to school we were taught English using phonics.
In my teaching experience with the primary grades I utilized the methods I was taught and
understood why phonics was necessary to understand our own language.
It does not help to memorize the names of letters if we do not learn the sounds of the letters - the name of the letter is not the sound.
Writing is important if we wish to present our ideas in a way that is understandable to others.
Many jobs become more accessible to us if we can express an idea, or thoughts, in a concise and clear way. There are many complaints from companies saying it is difficult to find employees now that are able to write well. So, as with most things in life, we have to work hard to develop our writing skills.
