My studies at university included Child Growth and Development, mathematics, science, industrial management, Spanish, and French languages. I realized we cannot learn another language if we do not understand our native language.
My first job was teaching in a one room school with all eight grades in the same class. Here I was able to put to use my training in phonics. By the end of the first year the first grade students were able to read at the fourth grade level.
I graduated to a junior high school where I taught basic mathematics and U.S. history. Over the years I came to realize that the most important thing in our beginning education was to read and comprehend what we read. If we can read well, we can teach ourselves anything.
I have traveled and worked in many Countries, published an adventure novel about one of my experiences in life, and am an editor of translated Chinese English for large companies. Coming close to retirement age, I went back to school and acquired a TESOL Certificate for Business English. For the last ten years I have taught students of all ages in China.
Remember, it is more difficult to re-learn if we do not learn correctly the first time. Each person has a different way of learning. Lessons should be geared to the individual.
