As a scientist who's published and completed research in a wide variety of scientific areas and a former high school science teacher with nearly a decade of tutoring experience, I bring both tremendous content knowledge and proven teaching and tutoring experience to my work. Need help with any aspect of math or science? Trying to prepare for entry to medical school and a career as a physician or researcher? I am excited to work with you.
I have been tutoring and teaching for the last 9 years, beginning as a tutor for college and high school students. From 2010 to 2012, I worked as a high school science teacher in Connecticut. In 2013, I worked as a consultant and researcher at a medical startup, while simultaneously teaching MCAT review courses for Kaplan Test Prep.
In 2012, I successfully navigated the daunting medical school application process, gaining interviews at over 15 schools and being admitted to my number one choice, the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. I have helped a number of students prepare for the medical school application season, including helping them craft their application essays and maximize their scores for the MCAT. In my own preparation for medical school, I achieved a 98th percentile test result on the MCAT (37S), and I have taught several MCAT review classes.
During my university studies, I obtained two degrees - a bachelor of arts in physics and a bachelor of science in biochemistry - graduating magna cum laude. In university, I held numerous leadership roles, from being chair of the school's Educational Advisory Committee to leading an organic chemistry workshop for undergraduates. I have published research I completed as second author in a national journal (Journal of Bioconjugate Chemistry) and I have published a study on cancer genetics as first author (in Cell Cycle).
The confidence and expertise I have in all components of science (from biology to physics) and mathematics (from algebra to calculus to statistics) is matched only by the attentiveness, focus and sense of humor I bring to my tutoring and teaching. I have successfully worked with students from all walks of life and all ages - from 6th graders just beginning to become truly independent learners, to college seniors struggling with differential equations. In all cases, I've found ways to connect with my students and to pinpoint the exact areas they are struggling in, and help them grow in those areas.
My tutoring, teaching and academic experience is broken down by grade level and focus below:
Middle school: I have taught middle school science and mathematics at the 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. I am an expert at making my students comfortable and interested, and in breaking down the subject into manageable chunks of information that they can master. I am excited to tutor middle school students in any level of math or science. I am also experienced with tutoring middle school students to take the SSAT and ISEE examinations for entrance into competitive secondary schools.
High school: I have taught high school biology and physics at the 9th and 10th grade levels. I am comfortable and experienced with any level of high school mathematics or science, but also with the broader themes of college preparation and standardized testing. In addition to numerous high school classes, I have successfully tutored students for the SAT, AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Calculus and AP Chemistry examinations.
College: I have tutored college students for more than 6 years in everything from calculus to organic chemistry. I have tutored college students at many different levels of academic preparation, and I've developed a flexible, comfortable and serious approach to helping students succeed in challenging college courses.
Post-baccalaureate: I offer tutoring for students interesting in taking the MCAT examination for medical school or any of the Praxis examinations for teaching. I have successfully taken 3 Praxis examinations, achieving high percentile scores, and I received a 98th percentile score on the MCAT. I offer help on applying to any professional school.
Whatever your academic goal, I look forward to helping you achieve it. As a scientist who's published and completed research in a wide variety of scientific areas and a former high school science teacher with nearly a decade of tutoring experience, I bring both tremendous content knowledge and proven teaching and tutoring experience to my work. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My college background included several courses in statistics, including General Statistics and Mathematical Modeling. As a medical student at UC San Diego school of medicine, I have developed a strong foundation in general biosatistics, while learning a wide variety of more advanced biostatistical methods, including multivariate regression, Kaplan-Meier analysis, and Cox proportional hazard methods. I have employed these and other methods repeatedly in my research work in cancer genetics and targeted therapy.
I taught myself calculus in high school, then formally took classes for it in college. Calculus is one of my favorite subjects. I've taken Calculus 1 and 2 (differential and integral calculus), Calculus 3 (advanced integral calculus, sequences, series and vector calculus), Differential Equations, and Mathematical Modeling. I have tutored several high school and college students in calculus, consistently bringing both my strength in and love of the subject to the tutoring session.
In college, I completed my major in biological chemistry which included taking a course in Genetics and a course in Molecular Biology. I succeeded in achieving an A+ score in both courses. I have conducted research in cancer genetics at UC San Diego school of medicine with one of the nation's top cancer researchers. Finally, I have successfully completed advanced coursework in genetics as a medical student at UCSD school of medicine.
Graduating magna cum laude with a degree in both physics (B.A. Physics) and biochemistry (B.S. Chemistry, focus in Biochemistry), I have taken and excelled in all the courses needed for success on the MCAT. In May of 2010, I took the MCAT test and received a total score of 37S, placing me in the 98th percentile of test takers (only 2% achieve this score or higher).
The MCAT is undoubtedly one of the most difficult entrance examinations for professional or graduate schools. My success in preparing for and taking the MCAT, along with my extensive teaching and tutoring experience, makes me uniquely qualified to tutor students preparing for this test.
Organic chemistry is one of the most feared undergraduate courses taken in preparation for both graduate studies in chemistry as well as many professional paths, from medicine to pharmacy. My experience first as a successful organic chemistry student, then as an organic chemistry workshop leader at my university, and finally in privately tutoring college students in organic chemistry, has shown me that "O. Chem" does not have to be as challenging as it is usually regarded.
I took Organic Chemistry for a year, Organic Laboratory for a semester and Organic NMR Spectroscopy for a semester. The following year, I worked as an Organic Chemistry Workshop mentor, leading a workshop class of 15-20 undergraduates throughout the year, helping them succeed in their organic chemistry class.
In addition to this, I have successfully tutored over 5 students in organic chemistry, focusing on the breakdowns in their understanding and their lack of comfort with the "language" of organic chemistry.
I have completed 2 years of study in pharmacology as part of my medical training at UC San Diego school of medicine. This has included learning and applying both basic pharmacological principles and hundreds of specific drugs to countless pathological situations, from infectious disease to cardiovascular pharmacology to neurology. These studies added to a solid foundation of pharmacology that I developed while a biochemistry major. Additionally, I have completed research in the pharmacology of targeted therapies for cancer while at UC San Diego school of medicine.
