Greetings tutor seeker! My name is Laurie and I tutor in math, chemistry, and chemical engineering. I love these subjects and love to help my students understand them. My aim as a tutor is to increase my student's understanding of the material not just to the level of proficiency but to the level of enjoyment. I get to know my students and use that knowledge of their life interests to explain concepts. I work to be a catalyst to their learning process rather than just another robotic drone endlessly citing boring theorems and definitions.

I think of science and math not as subjects but as languages. I work with my students on communicating in these languages rather than just the concepts. For example, when you think of the word, "sun" an image and feel of warmth and brightness comes with the word. I seek to make this connection for the student with the subject matter vocabulary and concepts. Terms like "reaction" and "equation" can have life when they are used in the languages of science and math.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemical Engineering

My experience in chemical engineering comes from my schooling as well as my work experience. I worked as a process engineer for a company where I designed combustion equipment. I performed calculations to determine pressure drops, combustion characteristics, and velocities.

I have a Bachelors and Master's in Chemical Engineering. I have tutored in Introduction to Chemical Engineering, Numerical Methods, and Fundamentals of Process Engineering courses. I have also been a teacher's assistant for an Introduction to Chemical Engineering course.
