I am a full-time doctoral student at Oral Roberts University. For the 2013-2014 school year, I worked part-time for Waynesville R-VI School District as a substitute teacher. I tutor part-time because helping others improve themselves through education is really my passion in life.
I pride myself in helping my students be confident in themselves. I see it as my job to bring them to a level at which they perform above grade level and excel in the subject in which I tutor them to the point that they have no need for my services any longer.
I also emphasize study skills and work habits because these are areas that I had to develop through trial and error while I was enrolled in school to excel. Mastering these areas means a higher GPA, less stress, and more free time!
I completed an associate's degree at Edison College in Ft. Myers, FL with a concentration in communication. I also completed a bachelor's degree in English at Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL with some coursework in the educational field. I completed my master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA with honors. I worked for Ashford University as an online adjunct teaching assistant helping undergraduate students improve their writing for three years. And I am currently completing a doctor of education degree in educational leadership at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK.
My first experience tutoring was with my two-year volunteer position with Big Brothers and Sisters of Charlotte County. I was a homework tutor.
My second tutoring experience was with a contracted job with Club Z In-Home Tutoring Services of Sarasota, FL. I tutored 1st-3rd Grade reading. I had four students during my 3-4 month contract. From my 15 contract hours, one student did not require tutoring after my services. The students were all Spanish-speaking (ESL).
My third experience tutoring was with a contracted job through Smart Start, Inc. I tutored one developmentally disabled student about two months after school.

I am very encouraging and direct students to discover insights for themselves. I also study each individual’s response to my general conceptual teaching style.

I am most qualified to tutor English as a second language to native Spanish speakers because I have Intermediate language proficiency. However, I am also beginning my studies of Mandarin Chinese and would like to help native Chinese speakers improve their English as well. Obviously, some proficiency in spoken English will be needed for native Chinese speakers. I am more confident in my ability to communicate effectively in Spanish.
I practice both langauges in and out of the classroom, and took the Spanish CLEP in lieu of two semesters of Intermediate Spanish at the college level. I have made it a point to utilize the immersion method to improve my listening and speaking skills in the languages, and have traveled to countries where both Spanish and Mandarin were spoken as the national languages respectively.
I believe that I am uniquely qualified to tutor students in their preparation for the GED because I have completed my undergraduate course work which included several hours of teaching observation. I was able to observe the methods of the traditional classrooms grades 6-8 and then also the tutoring sessions of students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade at Sylvan Learning Center in my area.
I have patiently worked with students behind their grade level in reading for a semester, and I also have experience tutoring middle school students on a volunteer basis. Having been trained by Club Z In-Home Tutoring services how to properly access a students level of comprehension and track his or her progress, I feel that aiding any student in preparing to take the GED will be right in my area of expertise.
My education began in computer networking in 2002. Up until the fall of 2007 I had not actively enrolled in any programs for networking online, but since then I have been schooled by John Childers and Robert G. Allen on effective networking online.
I also continue to review materials by less known, but equally as educated pioneers in the field such as Daren Gaudry and Ann Sieg.
The student that studies with me will learn the basics of creating a web presence or brand, the most effective methods of extending your network via the World Wide Web and then also the current trends in Web 2.0 as covered by newcomers to the field like Eben Pagan and Dennis Karganilla.
I will guide the student first through and overview of the last 5-7 years in computer networking, educate them on some of the software and hardware necessary to function in today's arena, and then let them try out their new skills with guidance as needed.
I believe that teaching study skills involves convincing the students to develop new habits. Utilizing effective study skills involves knowing your primary learning type(s), proven methods for recalling material, and time management. It can be a difficult subject because it is taught in college as one size fits all (i.e. spend two hours studying outside of the classroom for every hour in the classroom.) Though this method is good it is only the beginning.
When developing study skills and habits with some of the students I tutored in the past a great deal of the time was spent on getting the student to the point where they are routinely trying out the new system of studying which we both put together until they realize results pleasing to his or herself. Because just telling the student what to do it not enough, a system of studying must be developed uniquely for them from the many suggested models and then they have to apply it and see results for there to be lasting change and benefit.
I have studied learning theory over the course of three years and I am always looking into different methods of absorbing materials because even though I am at the graduate level I am still a student. Effective study skills are even more pertinent to me now than before.
