I am a college graduate who was an RN for 17 years. During that time, I home schooled my three boys for eight years, and just completed being my youngest son's learning coach for online school for the last two years. I have taught science, math, algebra, history, spelling, language, phonics, and many other classes. I have also taken the NCLEX in the past. I was also in the military and scored very well on the ASVAB test. I have taken many college level classes in anatomy and physiology, psychology, sociology, chemistry, and nursing. I use many different learning techniques because I understand that every person learns differently. I use visual, memorization, verbal, mnemonics, notes, tables, examples, reading, writing, hands-on, etc. It depends on the student's specific strengths. I was also an aid for 1 1/2 years for a child with Down-Syndrome, using many different techniques to help her understand her school materials. I was a pediatric nurse for many years, as well as tutoring a few children privately at different intervals. I love working with children or adults, so I hope I can meet your needs.
My youngest son is ADHD. I have taught him at home for a total of seven years, both unmedicated and medicated. I know the signs of ADHD, as well as what type of learning environment is best for someone with ADHD. I also have a 17 year medical background as an RN, so I have had professional experience with ADHD as well.
I took the AFOQT and was given a college scholarship through the military under the ASCP program due to my scores. I have six years of aircraft maintenance experience, as well as an AAS in Aircraft Maintenance Technology, both during my years in the Air Force. My military background will be useful for tutoring.
I was a basketball player in high school, as well as in the Air Force, for a total of 10 years. I coached children's recreational basketball for seven years. I coached high school girl's basketball for two years.
I was a Sunday School teacher for more than 5 years. I have also participated in many Bible Studies myself at church. I have also taught many years at VBS for children.
I took 2 years of Criminal Justice classes in college, as well as receiving certification as a legal nurse consultant. I am familiar with the basic criminal laws, as well as being familiar with researching cases in law books and on the internet.
I taught the Abeka curriculum to my three children through 7th grade. Classes included were phonics, language, science, health, math, reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and history. I use many different techniques to ensure that I meet their learning skills. I teach verbally, hands on, using examples, written, and using objects to explain tough problems. I use everyday examples to make things seem more real.
I come from a musical background. I can read music in both treble and bass clef. I know the different types of notes (whole, half, quarter, etc.). I have sung in church choirs since childhood. I play and read guitar music, as well as recorder. I am self-taught on the piano, so I am familiar but not expert.
I have used Microsoft Windows for years. I am familiar with many of the programs, including word processing, disk defragment, system restore, and the everyday needs of word processing. I have a strong grasp of the basic components and can navigate the system when troubleshooting the system.
I was a nurse for 17 years. My skill set ranged from medical/surgical to pediatrics to labor/delivery/postpartum/nursery to psychiatrics to geriatrics to home health. I took the NCLEX and passed it the first try. I have a strong grasp in many areas of nursing because of my diversified background, which is important on the NCLEX.
I was an RN for 17 years, which included teaching patients proper nutrition, as well as alterations in diet due to certain sensitivities and disease processes. I worked with anorexic and bulimic teens, as well as trying to meet the nutritional needs of two of my own children with dietary issues. I have also cared for a child with Celiac Disease, and I understand the special needs set forth by these types of issues.
I taught the Abeka phonics program to my children, which helps students understand the different phonetic rules of reading and spelling words (such as "i" before "e" except after "c"). I taught blends, and I taught how to use those blends to make words. I started with teaching the sounds of all the letters, then writing all of the letters. From there, we learned basic blends that could be used to make different words. For example, learning the blend "at" can help students to learn bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, sat, and so on. Using blends and rules help the student to learn the English language more easily. I was also an aid for 1 1/2 years for a child with Down-Syndrome, using many different techniques to help her understand her school materials. I was a pediatric nurse for many years.
I was in speech and debate in high school. I also took speech in college. I know all the aspects important in public speaking, including eye contact, intonation, rate of speech, inflection, etc. I understand the physiological reactions that the body can go through. I also know how to prepare for many types of public speaking (persuasive, argumentative, informational, etc.)
I worked as an aide for 1 1/2 years with a girl with Down Syndrome. I taught her the math curriculum, and helped her in all of her other classes. I helped her with projects. I assisted her in interacting with the other children in her class. I was an RN for 17 years, so I am able to handle the physical and mental assistance required by children with special needs.
I swam on a swim team for several years. I am proficient in all strokes: breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle. I know how to do bilateral breathing and flip turns. I still swim several times a week at the local YMCA.
