For over 20 years I have been engaged in teaching or tutoring in one way or another, helping spark students' interest in not just the "subject", but in ways to make their own interests and knowledge intersect with what else they may need to know. I have helped preschool children with letter recognition, phonics, and vocabulary and I have helped older elementary pupils with their language and math skills, including spelling, reading, writing, and basic arithmetic facts and pre-algebra. I am teaching my grandchildren to speak Spanish.
Most of my classroom teaching experience has been with adult learners of Spanish and English. From 1995-2000, I taught conversational English and Spanish to Japanese corporate employees in Japan. I designed and taught the first elective Spanish class for middle-school students at a private day school in Overland Park, Kansas, and I have taught Latin both as a for-credit offering at Avila College in Kansas City, and as a private endeavor. As a professional editor, proofreader, and translator, I can help people lay out their ideas for writing in a cohesive and logical way, and guide the writer to grammatically correct, correctly spelled communication.
I feel I am at my best in the one-on-one interaction of tutoring, because learning involves lots of questions that require lots of time and attention. What could be better than having a teacher all to yourself, during the whole class time?
I look forward to helping you find ways to succeed in your efforts to learn. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been an independent student of the Bible and theology for the past 40+ years. I completed academic Bible classes at Saint Mary College in Kansas in 1993 and 1994. I have been involved in both Kerygma and Education for Ministry in the Episcopal Church, and I am writing a book on Scriptural texts and paraphrases which form the bulk of the liturgy of the Anglican Christian tradition.
I have been a classroom paraeducator in K-2, and a Spanish teacher for grades 6-8. I helped both my granddaughters learn to read through phonics and spelling recognition, and they are successful 4th and 6th graders now. I excel in one-to-one teaching situations, and I greatly enjoy helping young learners succeed in learning.
