I have an extensive background in English, Writing, (Creative Writing - 10 books published on Smashwords as e-books and 2 paperbacks at PublishAmerica), Computer technology and associated software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Visual Basic and Dreamweaver (web page design). I graduated in 1993 from Memphis State University with a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in Writing. Prior to that I spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy traveling all over the world. I have worked as a teacher for 3 years in a high school Vocational Technical program teaching computer design and repair, cabling and networking and computer infrastructure. I earned my A+ certification during that time. At the present time I am working as a Substitute Teacher in California concentrating in the areas of Special Ed and ASD (Alternative Schools).
I can draw on experience ranging as widely as loading/unloading freight for a trucking company, writing grant requests for at-risk kids, managing an office for the Fedex Pilots Association, developing database programs for over 60 different companies in the metro-Memphis area and teaching computer related software programs like Microsoft Access, Word, Excel and Visual Basic in 2 college settings. I feel like my life experiences allow me to adapt to most of the challenges I face in today's fast-paced world.
American History is vast in spite of being less than 300 + years in the making. There are so many facets of American History that learning about how early Americans lived is sometimes a daunting task. Do you study the American Revolution or the Civil War? How about the inventions like the Colt pistol that went into conquering the wild West? Industrial Revolution played a large part in the background toward making the American History the legacy it is today.
I have played chess for about 50 years, participating in numerous tournaments during that period of time. I have organized and sponsored chess clubs at three different schools for the purpose of providing a venue for middle school and high school students that would allow them to participate in local and statewide events in the state of Tennessee. I am very much a chess enthusiast who enjoys keeping my hand in the game.
I have an extensive understanding of both written and spoken English and can assist U.S. native born students and students from other countries with equal ease. If you need help with English composition, English literature or writing, contact me.
I taught general computer technology and repair for the Shelby County Vocational High School program from 2006 - 2008. I have an A+ certification in Technology. Courses that I taught were Computer Design and Repair, Computer Infrastructure, Cabling and Networking.
In the past I have built my own computer from parts purchased at computer stores like Fry's. In my Computer Repair class I supervised the students as they assembled kits and tested for faulty components. Cabling and Networking gave them an opportunity to set up networks of computers, troubleshoot problems and pass data packets between computers.
Government and Politics are often part of American history that is transparent to those who want to learn about how government in the U.S. developed. How did Thomas Jefferson's policy regarding England propel the young United States into the War of 1812. Or how did Woodrow Wilson's desire for the success of the League of Nations color his decisions to enter World War I when he did? Richard Nixon's policies allowed Watergate to happen and might have colored American perceptions of politicians forever. Understanding how Congress and the courts interact with the President are crucial in knowing what is happening in the U.S.
Understanding English grammar is sometimes one of the most daunting tasks that face English language learners. It is after mastering how words are used in a sentence that people begin to understand the spoken language better. English language learners sometimes have a hard time understanding which words to use in which contexts.
Literature often tells us where we've been as a race of human beings. Shakespeare documented how we feel about witches in his writing. Ernest Hemingway showed us the underbelly of life in some of his writings. Edgar Allen Poe was an exceptional writer of the edgy side of human experience and warped our minds with his descriptions of life in Mask of Red Death.
Literature reveals the best side of man and the worst in the same cloth. It shows us where we've been and may point to where we are destined to go.
I have used all versions of Microsoft Access in the last twenty years. I taught Access at the college level at two different schools for about 7 years.
I have used Access to develop stand-alone databases for over 60 different companies in the Metro Memphis area in areas such as food/beverage tracking, hotel management, hospital drug testing, police warrants issuing, title loan tracking, pilot dues/voting management, bank credit card processing, as well as lots of small mom and pop businesses. I have found Access to be a very powerful management tool for all sizes of business ventures.
Microsoft Excel is a very powerful spreadsheet tool that can be used to store and display information about your business that you might want to show to clients and business partners to increase and enhance any data that you want to present.
Today's society is very sight-oriented and responds well to anything that can be graphically demonstrated. Excel far surpasses other programs in the generation of graphs and charts that sizzle and pop.
My wife uses Powerpoint for her end-of-the-school-year ceremonies for her middle school kids. Pictures of the students coupled with appropriate music, fading scenes, and words of wisdom produce a setting where there isn't a dry eye in the assembly. Parents love seeing their children portrayed using Powerpoint.
Whether used for business or pleasure, Powerpoint is easily one of the most powerful tools in the Microsoft arsenal. It is easy to use, intuitive and easy to master. On top of that - it makes the developer look professional.
I have an A+ certification. `Microsoft Windows is something most of us take for granted in today's high-tech world. Knowing how Windows works is essential to fine tuning what we see when we sit down at our computers.
Windows controls a huge array of complex sub-programming that enables our computers to support us in the manner to which we have become accustomed. Knowing how to install and uninstall programs is just one essential part of the process that is covered by my presentation of Microsoft Windows.
Microsoft Word is essential to my job as a writer, editor and publisher. Word functions as it should when it is transparent to the operator and allows us to type to our heart's content - save the file - restore the file - edit our previous work and re-save the corrected file.
Word is a complex program - having many moving parts that support us in the development of our thoughts onto paper. It is essential that we know how to use it properly.
Networking and cabling often go hand in hand when considering what it takes to assemble and run a networked computer system.
Today's networking is very complex on the one hand and very simple on the other. Most of the gear is plug and play. It is the theory behind the scenes that makes networking into the complex animal that it is.
I try to break down networking to some of its basic components when presenting it to first time students.
Proofreading is the essential tool that all those who write use to ensure themselves that they are actually saying what they want to say.
Most people need that extra set of eyes to look at what we have written - to ensure correct spelling and grammar. Nothing kills an idea more than a typo. Every document must be proofed before you submit it to someone for review or send it to make a statement.
Public speaking can be said to be something a person is born with the ability to do. However, I believe it is more learned than natural ability.
By concentrating on the factors that make public speaking so important to us, we can notice how effective public speakers say their words, gesture and communicate with their audience. Adolf Hitler wasn't a good moral person but he learned how to sway an audience and used that ability to forge an empire.
People often judge us by our ability to speak in public. They like those who can speak well (look at the Miss America pageant) and shun those who can't.
Reading is the backbone of understanding the world around us. Without knowing what is being said - we are in the dark about how to respond. Reading provides a people with a measure of understanding that goes beyond just the printed media. Complex ideas are presented and mulled over - knowledge is imparted and bounced back through actions that are based on what the person observed in the written word. Reading has impact on all of us as we strive to make sense of our world around us.
Religion and our reliance in faith in a higher power than man has interested me most of my life. At the young age of 19 I was a full-time minister in southern Ohio where I worked with a small country congregation before enlisting in the Navy.
That religion plays an important part in our lives is a given. That we must be willing and able to accept everyone's beliefs as their own even though they differ from our beliefs is something that history has taught us the hard way.
People today need to understand how religion plays a significant part in their everyday lives - from concepts of sins to rewards and punishment.
SQL is the basic component of almost any Microsoft product. Access, Word and Excel all use sequel language to make data connections and to pass data from one point in a program to another.
Understanding SQL is a huge advantage for anyone who is concerned about becoming a full- fledged programmer. Without SQL you only see part of the picture.
SQL is the backbone of programming and anyone interested in programming for business or pleasure should investigate some of the books that are available on SQL.
What do we do with the vocabulary that we learn in school? Most of us use it the rest of our lives, whether we are aware of that fact or not.
How we speak to our peers depends upon the vocabulary we learned growing up. Some of it we obtained naturally from our family - most of it came by means of a book that had words and definitions in it.
Either way - we are judged by the vocabulary we use.
I use Dreamweaver8.0 as my web development tool. To me it is easier to use than some of the other web development packages on the market.
There is still a lot that I'm learning every day about using this tool, but you can log on to my website (which I can't give here) and view the progress that I've made. My software guru friend said "it is slick and looks cool. People who open up the site should be impressed." Ron Davis, Brighton, TN.
Where do we fit into the complex pattern that makes up the world as a whole. World History should explain why a certain people act and react as they do. What oppressions did the Khmer Rouge suffer that would make them put thousands of people into the 'Killing Fields'? Why did Hitler hate the Jews - did he have Jewish blood in his family tree? How did the American Indians become misplaced and forgotten in the short space of less than 200 years? And why did the British subjugate the Indian subcontinent. All these questions are answered when you study World History.
Writing is the one thing I love to do. Most days will find me working on a book project or screenplay. I really enjoy working with people on their school/college projects and have a track record of improving the grade point average of those students who I've worked with.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
