Before becoming a stay-at-home mom to my one-year-old daughter, I worked for three years as a Special Education teacher, covering all grades from pre-kindergarten through ninth grade. I loved helping my students grow academically and personally to overcome obstacles, such as Aspergers Syndrome and other Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, emotional disorders, reading struggles, fine and gross motor delays, and speech difficulties. I strive to create fun, interactive lessons to help students learn - and enjoy the learning process! I've seen great success among my students by using tactile and visual resources as much as possible.

I am also fluent in American Sign Language and work periodically as an Interpreter for the Deaf. I am available to tutor students who wish to learn the language, as well as to tutor students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (or whose parents/caregivers are Deaf or Hard of Hearing). I am willing to use either English or American Sign Language as the primary language in which to tutor, depending on the needs of the student.

I am willing to travel farther distances than 10 miles but will need to adjust pay accordingly.

Vocabulary

I love words - learning about them, their history, and how to apply them. I love to find creative ways to help students make associations in the brain between new words and old words, compare synonyms and antonyms, find root words to figure out meanings, and simply enjoy increasing their vocabulary (and thereby impressing others with their exceptional word usage!)

Grammar

Some might call me a "grammar nerd", as I am very in tune to correct language structure (and therefore grammatical errors). I enjoy using fun tools, songs, and resources to teach students correct grammar!

Spelling

Spelling is one of the trickiest parts of the English language. However, there are tricks to learn the spelling of some words. I enjoy teaching students to use word families, "rhyming rules" (such as "i before e except after c"), and more in creative ways so they can learn to spell words correctly!

Elementary Math

As a teacher, math was one of my favorite subjects to teach because of the hands-on nature of it. I enjoy choosing hands-on activities and learning tools based on my student's favorite things (animals, foods, cartoon characters, etc.) that will spark their interest, thereby turning "math time" into "fun time"! They learn without even realizing they are learning.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary school teacher and taught at the elementary level for a few years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. I enjoy working with the young students and helping them reach their full potential through fun and creative learning activities.

Special Needs

I am a certified K-12 Special Education teacher. I have worked with students with varying degrees of learning disabilities and other disorders. I enjoy helping students with special needs work to overcome obstacles and find their full learning potential.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified elementary and special education K-12 teacher; many of my students through the years had ADD/ADHD. I work hard to find creative ways to teach that will help the student maintain attention and remember the information.

Aspergers

As a certified special education teacher, I have worked with students wtih Asperger's both inside and outside the classroom, as I know many people who have been diagnosed with Asperger's. I am familiar with the needs of students on the autism spectrum and enjoy finding creative and interactive ways to help them learn!

Autism

I am a certified Special Education teacher and have had several students who had Autism, Aspergers, or a similar Autism Spectrum disorder. I greatly enjoy working with students with special needs, especially Autism Spectrum disorders, and helping them work to overcome obstacles and find their full learning potential.

Hard Of Hearing

I have a certificate in Deaf Studies and an Associate's degree in American Sign Language Interpreting. I have worked quite a bit with people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
