Hello my name is Danielle Barker! I come from a family of five, and I am the oldest of three. Growing up, I was always babysitting other children with a range of ages. After school I would work in a day care and help students with their homework. While in college I worked at the Autism Academy as a reading tutor and also did many other subjects when the school was short tutors for the children. I would always go to school with my mom as a kid and help her with classroom management and creating lessons.
Throughout the years of going to school for special education, I have been able to create my own teaching approach. I have noticed that the students do better when they have some one-on-one attention. My usual lessons consist of me introducing the current lesson that we will be going over, modeling some examples with the students, and then giving them some sort of independent work that allows them to work through the assignments themselves. I also like to make sure I know what my students know and what type of learner they are. Some students like to work through problems themselves and ask for help when needed and other students need direct instruction the first time and then like to work through problems. Finally, I want to make sure that all of my lessons have a common goal at the end and build off of each other. I will always review older information as well as going over new material that will increase their knowledge.
Some of the credentials that I have is that I graduated high school in 2008. From there I enrolled in University of Toledo where I studied speech and language pathology. Last winter I was going to get my master's in speech and language pathology but ended up enrolling in the LAMP program at the University of Toledo for special education. I have passed all of my state board exams and will be graduating next December with my masters. I have had two semesters of student teaching under my belt and will be finishing up my last semester of student teaching this upcoming semester. I love working with children and helping them be successful with learning.
Right now, I have a master's in special education. About 90% of my students have ADD/ADHD diagnoses. I have been able to work with these students and see progress when I use hands on activiites.
I have worked at the Autism Academy in Toledo for 2 years now. While at the academy, I helped students in all subject areas. I have recently been able to take an after school program that helps students with this type of disability excel in school.
I have done three years of student teaching, all in this area. I have mostly worked with students who are in grades 4-6 but have done after school programs with the other grades. When I work with these students, I like to do all direct instruction and have them work independently on areas that they have trouble. Most of my students work better when they have one on one attention, because they can then ask questions and not feel ashamed.
While in college I was assigned a phonics project. Here I had to work with students who had issues in this area. I was able to help my students by having them remember a phonics song. I would then incorporate the phonics song into the lessons. No matter what age they were in, they always enjoyed a creative way to remember their phonics.
I would love to help students with special needs because this is what I am going to school for. I have a bachelors in speech and language pathology and a masters in special education. Right now I am finishing up my last semester of student teaching. While student teaching I have found that hands on activities work the best when they are paired with direct instruction. I have come across all areas with students and am eager to help more students!
I have played volleyball for 8 years now. I started on the Varsity team when I was just a freshman as a defensive specialist. I coached an all girls team last year and had a lot of fun doing it. I like to allow the girls to try different areas that they may want to play at. I have also made videos so that some of my students were able to go and play in college.
