My educational background: I graduated high school in 2000 from Monroe-Jefferson in Monroe Michigan. I was an honor student, National Honor Society member and student council member. Upon graduation I made my way through carpentry and roofing skill trades. These served me well, but certainly left me wanting more. In the fall of 2004 I enrolled and attended The University of Toledo. My course of study lead me to a Bachelor of Science in English with a minor in both Spanish and American Literature. Upon graduation I entered the hospitality workforce. My communication and problem-solving skills were maintained by interactions with customers, vendors, not-for-profit point of contacts and literally any type of person, from any walk of life.
My tutoring experience: While attending The University of Toledo as part of a work-study program I worked in the Upward Bound office. This allowed local high school students preparing for college to receive free tutoring in Math, English or Science. Progress was monitored through communication with the students high school teachers as well as updated through a grade history kept in the Upward Bound Office.
For a year after graduation I participated in a program run through Jonas Education Services. The program allowed access to tutoring services for children from low-income families. Children were split into work stations based on age and topic area being covered. At most, I would be providing services to 4 children at one time. Thee sessions would typically last 60-80 minutes 2-3 times per week.
My approach is comprehensive. It has worked best for me to take into account personal interest and motivating factors in a students life in order to maximize their effort level. From the start I am giving genuine interest into both likes and dislikes and using these facts to spur work forward in the subject area. I will do my best to present objectives as choices so as to allow the student to control the pace in which information is gained.
I maintain a beautiful apartment above an art-gallery in downtown Toledo with my wife. My work committments are during the day from eight until four or five in the evening.
