Professional ACT Preparation Program is here!

High school Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors have never had a more important time in their life to prepare for a test. If you would like details about this ACT Preparation Program, check my subject descriptions or email for a more detailed breakdown of how I help students earn tens of thousands in scholarships.

My personal business philosophy is to help students not just to find the right answers but help to develop problem solving skills and the ability to use their resources effectively. This approach to tutoring does more than just prepare a student to take and pass a test, it prepares them to be successful wherever life takes them. One of the benefits of this philosophy is that students learn to work independently rather than becoming reliant on a tutor. This is particularly powerful when a potential employer is determining which applicant is best able to work independently with the self-motivation to complete the tasks they are given.

I have lived in the Carlisle area for 15 years. I am active at Hillcrest Baptist Church as a substitute Sunday School teacher and with our regular adult mission trips. I enjoy jig fishing for crappie, bluegill, perch, and walleye. I graduated from Carlisle High School in 2007 but spent my last 2 years of high school taking courses at Miami University's Middletown Branch under the PSEO (Post Secondary Education Option) program. I then attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and in 2011 received my Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics with a concentration in Nanotechnology and certification in Semi-Conductor Devices and Fabrication. Rose-Hulman is the highest rated undergraduate engineering school according to the U.S. News and World Report for well over a decade.

My freshman year of college I took a position as a tutor for the Homework Hotline. The Homework Hotline is a program funded by the state of Indiana and the Lily Endowment. It was setup to provide math and science help over the phone to middle- and high-school students. The Homework Hotline employs over 100 tutors and many stay for all 4 years of study. I received the Tutor of the Quarter award in my first year. The supervisors chose me to receive the award because students would specifically request me again and because other tutors and supervisors would bring tough problems to explain to get my advice. I was always excited to be helping people understand things important to me. Some students and parents would call in just to say they are so thankful that they haven't needed help for weeks because they had learned how to solve any new problem not just the specific ones we were doing at the time. During the summer I continued to work for the Homework Hotline putting together promotional materials and self-learning online resource modules for students to use during times our tutors are unavailable. At the end of my second year with the Homework Hotline I was promoted to the role of supervisor. As a supervisor I would help other tutors with the most difficult questions they received, train new and experienced tutors alike, and evaluate experienced tutors to help them continue improving. In total over the 4 years with the Homework Hotline I spent over 500 actual hours tutoring students and an additional 66 hours of CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) approved training to ensure all tutors maintain CRLA Level 1 Certification.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

For the ACT English section I focus on teaching students the tricks to improve their time management, grammar understanding, and how to pick the "best" answer when many seem to be good answers.

I cannot teach complete understanding of English Rhetoric, but I can certainly make sure the questions over mechanics understood. Students tend to have a sharp jump in English if there was room to improve in mechanics.

ACT Math

Professional ACT Preparation Program is here!

Incoming high school Juniors and Seniors have never had a more important time in their life to prepare for a test. And no test can be quite as stressful as the ACT. Scores can determine what college will accept you and even more importantly how much money they will offer.

Does it make more sense to put in 6-10 hours studying for the ACT and earning tens of thousands in scholarship money or to put in years of hard work to pay off student loans after graduating college?

My professional ACT program recommends 6 hours of tutoring to learn the strategies that will drastically improve test performance. These 6 hours typically come in three 2 hour sessions or two 3 hour sessions. Students who go through my program are very satisfied with the results and go into the test confident. They come back to tell me how much better they did and to schedule review sessions before each test date. Most go from 15-18 up to 22-25 or from 20-24 range to 28+.

ACT Science

My focus with students in the ACT Science is to teach how to avoid making it feel like reading and math. I spend a great deal of time teaching the strategies to finish this section quickly and accurately. This is one of the few tests where speed and accuracy are often the same thing rather than being a trade-off between the two. My highest scoring students (in the 30s) for the science section are the ones that have 10-20 minutes to spare when they finish taking the test.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is one of my favorite subjects to help students. It is the foundation for future math courses and more importantly has very powerful uses in everyday life.

Most students have trouble with algebra when they look at an equation to solve and get overwhelmed not knowing how to start. I help take away that anxiety by making it easy to get problems started. Most students find that once they are not getting frustrated right at the start of a problem, the other steps come easier as well.

Whether you are an advanced student taking algebra early and at an overwhelming pace or you are a student who has taken the class before but never managed to get the math to make sense I can help remove the emotional stress and improve your grades dramatically.

Algebra 2

Algebra is the foundation for future math courses and more importantly has very powerful uses in everyday life.

Most students have trouble with algebra when they look at an equation to solve and get overwhelmed not knowing how to start. I help take away that anxiety by making it easy to get problems started. Most students find that once they are not getting frustrated right at the start of a problem, the other steps come easier as well.

Whether you are an advanced student taking algebra 2 early and at an overwhelming pace or you are a student who struggled with algebra 1 and are now feeling even more behind in algebra 2 I can help remove the emotional stress and improve your grades dramatically.

ASVAB

I have never taken the ASVAB test myself, but my favorite part of tutoring is showing students test taking strategies to get them the grades the deserve with the information they already know.

I have no study resources of my own available for the ASVAB so need the student to provide the resources for us to use.

I can be helpful for all sections of the test but focus the strongest on the areas of mathematics and science.

Chemistry

Chemistry has so many different rules, so much math, and often moves so fast that students who get behind for any reason find it very hard to recover from alone.

My focus when helping students with chemistry is on the way to approach the problems so that the rules don't get overwhelming. Just having someone else to guide you through the steps a few times will make it so the next times on your own come easier.

One of the most common things I show students is how math often becomes easier when applied to real problems. Most students assume it becomes more difficult, but when problems include units getting the right answer is easier with the right mindset.

Precalculus

There are a few reasons I commonly see students looking for help in pre-calculus. Some students find they have forgotten some of the algebra skills needed to finish problems. Some students feel overwhelmed by how much information builds on previous sections and when they get behind it feels impossible to catch back up. Other students feel like they can solve individual problems well enough but during tests find themselves quickly stuck and frustrated.

Regardless of what your reason for wanting help with pre-calclus is, I can help take away the stress you are feeling and make it easier to get problems started and keep from getting stuck. Most students find that once they get past the confusing parts that frustrate them the other steps come easier as well.

Awesome Tutor! — My son's composite ACT score was much improved. Based on my son's feedback, Joseph is patient and can explain concepts in layman's terms that can be easily understood. Joseph was always available and timely. We owe Joseph a debt of gratitude. I have found as a parent that successful tutoring is twofold - possessing the ability to share knowledge and creating a connection with the student is vital ...
