Currently, I am a graduate student in English attending Miami University of Ohio where I teach freshman composition.
As a writing and subject peer tutor at my previous university, I developed real friendships with the students I worked with. Often, they felt comfortable coming back to me throughout all stages of the writing process from idea generation to outlining to final edits. My most important strategy to create this relationship was to be a friend and not a lecturer. I never wanted the students I tutored to feel helpless because I had "figured out" academic writing. The service I offer is to be an active listener and a guide.
I'm a firm believer in the idea that students will remember more of what they learn if they play an active role in that learning. I will never sit in silence with a student, marking up their assignments myself as if only I hold the secret to great paragraph construction. If we talk through the logical steps of editing (or anything else for that matter), we can always figure out why something has to be the way it is.
I thoroughly enjoy seeing the spark of understanding on a student's face, which is why I spent so much of the past four years working with students, refining my techniques, and gaining expertise in more and more subjects and tutoring situations.
