Qualifications and Subjects Offered: Hello! My name is Bethany, and I am a Teaching English as a Second Language certified professional tutor. I have experience tutoring English, Sociology, Psychology, developmental math, and study skills. I also have proofreading experience. Additionally, I have six years of experience working and volunteering with individuals with disabilities (autism, ADD/ADHD, blindness, deafness, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, MRDD, etc.). I also have experience tutoring English as a Second language/ English as a Foreign Language and helping international students with college level English classes. I speak intermediate level Spanish, beginning Arabic, and beginning English word order sign language, and I read grade 1 braille. I offer adult lessons over the phone, on the internet, or in person, and I offer children’s lessons in person.

Philosophy and Approach: I believe that everyone can learn, but everyone learns differently. Therefore, I work with students to find study methods and learning styles that fit each student. I help students deal with issues like testing anxiety so that they can be confident. I also help students learn how to organize their studies and their time. Additionally, I help children take responsibility for their studies and feel good about it.

I truly care about the success of my students, and I work hard to help them succeed. I involve parents in their children’s learning by providing written feedback after every lesson. I also listen to the parents’ concerns about their children’s learning; parents know their children best. Finally, I give adult students as much control as they want over the learning process, and I give children as much control as they can handle. Students can tell me in which areas they need help, and I will tailor lessons to meet their needs. Students can decide for themselves what study methods they like. I will provide detailed feedback after every lesson to help students in this process.

For more information, be sure to check out my blog in the resources section, especially the posts “Guidelines for Tutoring Adults” and “Parent/ Children Tutoring Guidelines”.

I look forward to working with you! :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Currently, I work in disability services at a community college, and many of my students have ADD/ADHD. I am familiar with the accommodations and study methods that help them achieve academic success. I have also worked with children with ADD/ADHD on a paid or volunteer basis for the last six years.

Aspergers

I work with the office that provides services for individuals with disabilities, including Asperger's Syndrome, at a community college. I am familiar with Asperger's Syndrome and able to adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of the individual with whom I am working. At my workplace, I also have the ability to receive guidance in my lesson planning from a disability specialist.

Autism

I have assisted autistic individuals with assigned coursework and life skills or supervised autistic children for six of the last seven years. Additionally, in my current position, I tutor autistic individuals in college courses. I work with the autistic students to assess their needs, determine what study methods work for them, and help them master the course materials. I also help some of these students improve their social skills.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified in teaching ESL/ESOL through the Global Leadership College in the United Kingdom. I also have experience tutoring ESL students from Asia, Mexico, and various Arab countries.

IELTS

I am certified in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I have worked with Arab students on improving their English language skills. Additionally, I have access to IELTS study materials.

Sociology

I work as a tutor at a community college. I tutor Sociology 1111. I also completed Sociology 1111 with a grade of an "A" in 2012.

Special Needs

I have worked with individuals with special needs for 5-6 years on a paid or volunteer basis and have assisted them with a range of subjects including Bible study, independent living skills, and academic coursework. To the best of my knowledge given privacy laws, I have worked with students with blindness, deafness, autism, cerebral palsy, ADD/ADHD, various conditions requiring a wheelchair, testing anxiety, reading disabilities, and learning disabilities. I have also worked with adults with special needs by tutoring them in psychology, sociology, developmental math, and English college-level coursework.
