Hunter College - CUNY (Music)
Rutgers University (Master's)
I am an experienced Spanish teacher. I studied music in college and received a BA in Music, but decided to get a degree in Spanish and obtained my Post Baccalaureate in Spanish and subsequently got certified to teach Spanish in New Jersey. I taught Spanish in various schools in New York and New Jersey until 2000 and then began a full-time job at New Providence High School in New Providence, New Jersey until I moved to Ohio in the Fall of 2012.
I have taught Spanish 1 through 5, AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature. Spanish is my first language, since my mother was born in Colombia and we always spoke Spanish at home. I have been involved in exchange programs with high school students and have been to Spain a number of times. I also have a very good background in Latin American and Peninsular literature.
I can tutor any Spanish student from grade school up to adult or college level.
I evaluate my students at the initial meeting and assess their level. I like to know what textbook they are using (if applicable) and inquire as to problem areas so that we may concentrate on those topics during our tutoring sessions.
I am available to answer any questions via email or phone.
Thank you for your attention.

My grandson had his first session this Wednesday and we both came away impressed with Maria. She was prompt, had reserved a conference room ahead of time for quiet and gave Colin suggestions of resources online for further studies. We will be connecting with her again for future sessions! I'm one impressed Grandma!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am fluent in Spanish and have a Post Baccalaureate in Spanish. I have almost completed all graduate work at Rutgers University for an MAT in Spanish.
