GED

The GED covers Language Arts-Writing, Language Arts-Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. They test against a 12th grade level of proficiency.

My experience in Elementary and secondary teaching in areas of Reading, Math, sciences, and history is quite helpful to people seeking to pass the GED testing.

From my years spent in industry dealing with real world problem solving for a living, I can also help you learn a how to read critically and reason better so that you have the flexibility to cope with variations in how the questions are written in those tests.

The most important part of answering any test question is first determining what the question is asking of you. That requires critical reading skill.

Microsoft Windows

For students needing help with general computer operation: I presume you will be using recent versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems and some kinds of specialized application software. I began working with computers in 1984. My work included 8 years as a Quality Technician testing industrial machine controllers, operational software, hardware, printers, peripheral equipment, 2 years as a UL certified Testing Lab Tech, plus more. I'm currently using Win7 and XP Professional operating systems in my own PCs.

Study Skills

I am a former Elementary school teacher available for students who need help in basic subjects from early elementary through 8th grade. Teaching for standardized tests is important, but the effort should go farther to prepare students for success in learning and in life.

Example: I challenge students to find main ideas inside of paragraphs and longer articles. Then students must support their contentions in their own words with evidence drawn from the material they read. That feedback allows me to measure students’ comprehension, vocabulary, experience background, and reasoning ability.

I used much the same approach when I worked as a QC Testing Tech in industries. There, I often needed to instruct machine operators and assistants. I wrote work instructions, had my helpers read the instructions and ask questions about the tasks, and then watched them perform some work. Whenever errors or confusion arose, I concentrated on those areas (which indicated they had not understood that facet of the instructions or the process).

By drawing out a constant stream of feedback from students, I gently guide them into learning new skills thoroughly. That develops reasoning abilities which allow students to be flexible and adapt readily to new situations in learning and work.

My methods center on breaking down problems into small, easy to fix parts. That lowers students' stress level thereby making learning easier, successful, and more enjoyable.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
