Hello! The Tap Dancing Engineer is here to help you learn.

I have a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and worked in the automotive industry for 8 years. I have also studied tap dance for over 20 years, including spending time with some of the most prominent teachers currently in the tap dance community. I have a lot of skills that I'd love to pass on to those that need a little help or are looking to learn more.

I'm very excited to start working one-on-one with students to help them learn. Everyone learns differently and the traditional classroom setting often isn't the best way for many students to learn. I love using analogies to explain concepts, especially if I can tie into something that my student is passionate about. For example, I've used tap dance references and analogies to help teach Algebra.

My personality is calm, honest, loyal, and a little silly. OK, maybe more than a little silly. I try to keep the atmosphere light and relaxed as I think this is the best way to learn. I am, of course, also sure to redirect distractions, and quickly get back on topic so that we get work done. As long as my student is putting in their best effort and truly invested in learning, I will put in boatloads of time and effort to ensure we achieve the learning goals while maintaining a happy and healthy learning environment.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hello again!   Well, I'm pretty bummed that I can't imbed pictures here directly. I'm looking into other blog options and thinking of just posting links here to blogs elsewhere. It was certainly a short-lived adventure here but I need to be able to include pictures in my blogs. Perhaps if WyzAnt ever adds that feature I'll come back here.    I'll post an update... read more

Hi again. I thought I'd start with something simple. Here's an everyday application of math, science, and graphing skills that I think you'll find useful. Enjoy!   A while back, the Tap Dancing Engineer was visiting some tap dancing friends in Canada. We ended up talking about recent strange weather, which of course led to a discussion of converting between temperature scales.    The... read more

Hi! Tap Dancing Engineer here.   I've decided to start a blog about the silly (and interesting) math and science things I do in my every day life. This is a fun a way for me to show how math and science can be applied to our lives outside of the classroom.   I've got a few ideas to get me started and I'll try to do this weekly, but no promises. I do a lot of nerdy math/science... read more
