I am a 45 year old resident of dayton Ohio, Born and raised here. I have studied and lived abroad and have been speaking/reading/writing the spanish language since I was 18. Being bilingual has landed me many successful jobs, and I have found it to be an invaluable skill. Anyone can learn, but we all do not learn in the same way. I was one of those student who didn't fit the mold, so I understand what it's like to need help. I enjoy helping students reach their full potential, and I firmly believe that the classroom environment simply does not always provide this. Remember, there is not shame in seeking help; no embarrassment in needing to be taught differently and never any dumb questions. I'll go over things as many times as you need, and if my technique is not working for you, let me know and I will work with you to ensure that we can communicate in a way that will work for you!
I have extensive experience working with children who have disorders within the autistic spectrum. My oldest son has Aspergers, and I have worked with such children in my experience in teaching as well as children within the child welfare system when I worked as a case worker for Montgomery County.
I was a school teacher for grades k-8 for a Dayton charter school. I taught a variety of subjects and had a focus on children with learning disabilities. I have extensive experience in teaching children with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia and autistic spectrum disorders.
I taught middle school and high school while I was a student in graduate school. My favorite subjects to teach were English and grammar. I feel so often public schools fail at teaching our children how to speak our own language properly. How you speak, the words you chose, and how you express yourself, all serve to make a great first impression. You only get ONE ! :)
Being well read is not an inborn trait. It takes time and interest, but most of all it takes curiosity. All you have to do is want to learn and you will! :) Most of the students I have taught when I was a school teacher have had some kind of learning disability or they simply weren't being taught in a way that resonated with them. In the day and age when video games have become convenient replacement for reading, children have lost the curiosity to read because our society has allowed it. Knowledge is power!
I was an exchange student in Bolivia when I was a senior in high school. I was placed with a family who spoke no English. I was forced to finish out my senior year in high school all in Spanish! I learned the hard way, but it has served me well. My passion for the language and the culture has lead me to many interesting places in my life as well as many interesting jobs.
While in grad school and undergraduate school, I tutored many adult and minor students in addressing improved study habits including removing distractions from their environment, breaking down material so its easier to digest, and teaching the ability to create outlines to summarize general ideas of concepts so the student can go back and fill in detail to make an overwhelming assignments more understandable. I have also found strategies such as creating self made study guides, flash cards and practice tests to build confidence.
In my years as a school teacher, I found that many students lacked basic vocabulary. The lack of fundamental language is quickly replaced with profanity and vulgar language. This is usually a red flag that someone actually lacks or isn't aware of the correct words. While teaching, one of my struggles was that I wanted to spend much more time on vocabulary than administration would allow. This did not make me a very popular teacher among some, but it made me a good teacher among many. :)
