I graduated from High School in 1999 with an Honors Science/Honors Liberal Arts Diploma. I graduated from Ohio Northern University in 2011, with a bachelor's degree in International Studies. My degree focused on political science, history, foreign language, and cultural studies. In addition, I took electives in English such as: Native American Literature, British Literature, and Web Publishing Practicum.
I have twelve years of teaching experience. Seven of these years were informal teaching experiences through the Girl Scouts and Johnny Appleseed Park District. Five years have been formal teaching experience. I have taught people of all ages a variety of skills and subjects.
I have 5 years of formal ESL teaching experience. I have worked with students from Japan, Saudi Arabia, China, and India. I have worked with young children and adults.
TEACHING METHODS:
ESL: Teaching techniques will vary depending on the fluency level, age, and goals of the learner.
For Young Children: For this age group I will use Montessori techniques and Montessori inspired materials to teach the subjects listed. With the exception of "Kindergarten Prep" tutoring, there will very little if any traditional workbook/worksheet use. Documentation of the child's progress will be provided in the form of finished projects in content areas or in the form of proficiency assessments/checklists.
Grades K-3: This age group will be using worksheets/workbooks for skill practice. Games within the specific content area will also be an important element for this age group. Children in this group will also engage in activities that involve practical application of content knowledge. Individual progress reports will supplement paperwork.
Grades 4-6: Children in this category will be using worksheets/work books for skill practice and drills. I will also provide hands on activities and games for these students. I may assign students in this age group a "special project" in order to ensure that they have mastered an area of particular difficulty. Individual progress reports will supplement paperwork.
Grades 7-12:
For History and English tutoring techniques will depend highly on individual student goals. Documentation of progress will vary as well.
For Research and Writing students will use practical application in order to master skills. The student will practice actual research skills and learn to write good papers by producing an original paper. This will include brainstorming, researching, drafting, editing, and final production skills. Here the product will serve as the primary documentation.
For Literature Analysis students will use practical application to learn critical reading skills, improve content understanding, and how to write analytical papers about literature.
For Adults: The subject matter and student goals will dictate the methods used.
