Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

Strictly speaking discrete mathematics is the mathematics of the set of integers or the mathematics of infinities with the same cardinality as the set of integers. Although in the university I was taught at, the course also came with instruction of mathematical reasoning and proof.

The textbook I have gave one of the most concrete demonstrations of the difference between the different cardinalities of infinite sets: The world of discrete mathematics is like a digital watch, you see the time jump from one number to the next, whereas in an analog watch there is a smooth transition between the times. Same goes for discrete mathematics. In mathematics we call things discrete if they involve: The set of integers, the set of whole numbers, or the set of natural numbers. Where as we tend to call something continuous if it involves the set of real numbers.

Logic

The study of valid reasoning. Logic serves as the fundamental building block of all studies in academia, from philosophy, to math, science, even computer science all depends on what Aristotle would call a "New and Necessary" way of thinking.

As a Mathematics Major one is very familiarized with logic in the following ways: Math majors are required in many universities to take a course in formal proof which is done extensively in the language of symbolic logic, or Boolean algebra. Math majors are also required to take a programming class which further builds on the mastery of logic.

Having graduated with a Degree of Mathematics, I have taken Discrete Mathematics which was the formal proof course in my school, C++ Programming, and introduction to philosophy. All of which go over logic, forms of arguments, and valid, and invalid reasoning.

Physics

I have taken calc based physics 1 & 2.

Trigonometry

Most of the concepts in Trigonometry have to do with: the ratios of a right triangle with a hypotenuse coinciding with the radius of a unit circle on the Cartesian plane. The rest is just pure human creativity.

When I took the New York State Teacher Certification Exam Content Specialty Test in Math, I got a perfect score of 300 on the Trigonometry section.

Think I can teach you Trigonometry? You can bet on it!

I was tutoring my brother for calculus 2 the other day on the trapezoidal rule for area approximation, the following function:√(x2+1) when I noticed he was making a consistent horrible mistake... He kept pulling out the +1 out of the square root to try to simplify this. So he claimed, √(1 +1)= √1+√1= 1+1 = 2. An obvious problem with this is the claim... read more

When I was studying to be a teacher, one of the classes I had to take was Literacy in Secondary Education. Since the word literacy is associated to reading and writing by most, it would strike many as a surprise that Math teachers have to take courses on literacy. However, literacy is the most practical and crucial aspect of ANY academic discipline, simply because it involves the ability... read more
