Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have experience with students and adults with ADHD/ADD as a substitute and later as a teacher for a number of subjects and grades K-12, especially 7-12, in public schools and parochial school. I have presented in national and international conferences on ADD/ADHD and I have published an article on ADD/ADHD personal blog on teaching Modern Greek to students with ADHD. I am about to graduate from my third masters in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I have been taught therapeutic and counseling interventions for people with special needs, including ADD/ADHD. My GPA in this program is 4.0. Also when I was doing my second masters that was in Human Relations Psychology-Clinical Counseling Option (GPA= 4.0; graduated with distinction), I did one semester internship at a Clinical Psychologist's office in Astoria, NY working with children and adults with special needs, including Asperger's. I was trained there in the use of Biofeedback for people with special needs, including ADD/ADHD and I was later on trained by American Biotec, Inc and Thought Technologies, Inc in General Biofeedback & EEG-Neurofeedback.

American History

I have taught American History I and II in NYC public schools for Junior High and High School.

Anthropology

I have taken a class in anthropology (archaeological anthropology) and I passed it with "A-". I also have used knowledge of anthropology in my social studies classes and I have taken students to anthropology tours and field trips. I am NYC certified tour guide and therefore I also have knowledge and experience of taking adults to anthropology tours, filed trips and museums.

In my master's thesis in history, I spent the Summer of 2002 in fieldwork in Athens and Chios Island, Greece where I used archaeological and anthropological methods, including surface survey, reading maps, and using archaeological and anthropological books and equipment. I used ethnographic methods in the field as I interviewed the locals of various locations of Chios, Greece in order to compare modern ethnographic material with the archaeological record and get more information about archaeological evidence found by locals in their properties and farms as well as any local customs of ancient origin, myths, legends or signs of any possibility recovering any archaeological evidence within their vicinity.

I am an avid reading of general anthropology, including cultural anthropology, ethnology and ethnography, biological/physical anthropology and linguistic anthropology. My 12 cr. in biology and my archaeology background help me to understand human evolution. I used skills of linguistic anthropology in my culturally diverse classroom teaching inner city youth from various ethnic and racial backgrounds.

Archaeology

I have taken a lot of archaeology courses from various departments, including anthropology and art history. My minor was in art history and many of the art history courses I took were both in art and archaeology. When I was doing my masters in history, I did an archaeological research, a surface survey on Chios Island, Greece and I recovered archaeological material, including pot sherds and inscriptions, which i submitted to the Kallimasia Museum, Chios Island. I was trained by Greek archaeologists and historians on how to use surveying equipment, compass, and maps, and skills in filedwalking.

I am an avid reading of archaeology from methods and ancient environment to Classical Archaeology, European and Native American Prehistory, Precolumbian Civilizations, Medieval & Byzantine Archaeology, Industrial Archaeology and Historical Archaeology. I have a huge collection of archaeology books.

I was trained there in the use of Biofeedback for people with special needs, including Aspergers and I was later on trained by American Biotec, Inc and Thought Technologies, Inc in General Biofeedback & EEG-Neurofeedback.

Autism

I have experience with students and adults with autism as a substitute and later as a teacher for a number of subjects and grades K-12, especially 7-12, in public school and parochial schools. I have presented in national and international conferences on learning disabilities, including autism. I am about to graduate from my third masters in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I have been taught therapeutic and counseling interventions for people with special needs, including autism. My GPA in this program is 4.0. Also when I was doing my second masters that was in Human Relations Psychology-Clinical Counseling Option (GPS= 4.0; graduated with distinction), I did one semester internship at a Clinical Psychologist's office in Astoria, NY working with children and adults with special needs, including autism. After graduating, I worked for a year as a teacher and therapist for young adults with special needs, including autism and intellectual disability, formerly called "mental retardation"). I was trained there in the use of Biofeedback for people with special needs, including Dyslexia and other learning disabilities and I was later on trained by American Biotec, Inc and Thought Technologies, Inc in General Biofeedback & EEG-Neurofeedback.

Career Development

I have taken career development and career counseling classes as well as two classes in vocational evaluation for my two counseling masters. I have three degrees and I am getting a fourth one. My GPA the last 10 years has been 4.0. That means I know how to apply to programs and what it takes to come up with a step-by-step career planning.

Classics

I was taught classics in Greece when I was in Junior High School and High School for 7 years, including 7 years of ancient Greek and 2 and a half years of Latin.

When I did my master's thesis, I used both ancient Greek and Latin in my research in Greece. I recovered some archaeological artifacts of Greek and Roman origin and I submitted them to the Kallimasia Museum in Chios Island, Greece. I translated into English inscriptions written in ancient Greek, some of them in the Ionian dialect. I have an outstanding knowledge of Attic Greek, the Ionic dialect, Koine (Hellenistic and New Testament Greek), Middle (Byzantine) Greek and modern Greek as well as Homeric Greek.

I was trained there in the use of Biofeedback for people with special needs, including dyslexia and other learning disabilities and I was later on trained by American Biotec, Inc and Thought Technologies, Inc in General Biofeedback & EEG-Neurofeedback.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring, subbing (substitute teacher) and teaching as regular elementary teacher for grades K-6 since 2000. Most of my students have been elementary students, though my certificate is in secondary education. I have helped many elementary students raise their test scores in all subjects.

Elementary Science

I have both substitute and tutoring experience in science for elementary school students for over 10 years with amazing results in students' improvement.

Geography

I have taught geography as part of the Social Studies curriculum in Junior High and High Schools of NYC. I have a good background in both physical and human geography and that is because I have a diverse background in both science and social sciences/humanities. I am good in reading maps, teaching the flags, and helping students integrate historical, geographical and environmental concepts in their interpretation of countries and improve their spatial reasoning. My fieldwork experience in archaeology using surveying techniques, my teaching of Earth science and my background in history have given me a lot of background that I have successfully used for my students.

Greek

I am a licensed teacher with over 12 years of experience in teaching and tutoring in Modern Greek as well as classical languages (Classical & Biblical Greek and Classical & Medieval Latin). I am native speaker of Greek. I received all my K-12 schooling in Athens, Greece where I also studied Modern Greek, Classical and Latin right from the horse's mouth.

I have 2 master's and a Bachelor's, and training in classics and ancient history and archaeology of ancient Greece. I have experience in teaching all age groups and all levels.

Why me? I believe I am probably one of the very few in New York who are both native speakers and have also academic credentials to teach Greek. I do not believe that merely speaking Greek is good enough. Unfortunately, many Greeks think that they can teach Greek just because they speak it. The thing, however, is how to teach the target language as a second/foreign language. That goes beyond superficial knowledge of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. That requires a basic knowledge not only of the linguistic and cultural context of the target language, but also to be able to understand the language, culture, learning style, and personal needs of the student. Every Greek Tutor/Teacher should master the appropriate pedagogic methods and approaches to teaching Greek as a second/foreign language and also have developed a solid and effective teaching style through teaching experience. I also strongly believe that language is profoundly intertwined with culture and history as well as with behavior. Deeper knowledge of modern Greek requires a knowledge of its historical development as well as classics.

I did a Thesis research for my master's (MA) in history (Queens College-CUNY) in Athens and Chios Island, Greece during the Summer of 2002 where I researched Greek libraries and communicated in oral and written Greek with Greek historians and archaeologists in my native language. I did field reaearch where I recovered archaeological material via surface survey and handed them in at the Kalimasia Museum, Chios Island (Greece). I used references written in modern Greek, ancient Greek and Latin for my thesis and I translated ancient Greek inscriptions published in my thesis ("Alexander the Great and Chios: see google books). I am a member of the Federation of Greek Teachers of America and the Prometheus Greek Teachers Association and the Ancient Historians Association.

I read and chant in Biblical Greek at least twice a week (Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings) at various Greek Orthodox Churches in New York City. I also teach the Bible, Byzantine hymns and Greek Orthodox Religion that all require a very strong background in ancient/Biblical Greek ("koine").

I believe in the communication approach of teaching foreign languages and my studies in education and psychology and experience working with students with special needs have helped me understand and teach effectively students with learning disabilities and ADHD. I have also published a few articles in education on my personal blog, including one in teaching modern Greek for students with ADHD where I further explain my teaching philosophy and my methods in teaching modern Greek and also a resume is there available.

I believe that everything can be taught to any age depending on how you teach it. Motivation in teaching has been my primary goal over the years as I realized that intrinsic motivation is the key to student's success. Therefore, I always make sure that I am aware of my students' needs and expectations; in other words, what the student wants to learn. I am also very resourceful in finding teaching resources and being a story teller sharing experiences from Greece and the Greek-American community. I use my resources and my own motivation to engage students in down-to-earth, pragmatic, practical, informal and intriguing conversations in Greek for effective everyday communication. I use the "history as a mystery" method not only in teaching history or mythology, but also in teaching any subject, including Greek. In other words, I try to engage students by sharing my enthusiasm and my own urge to uncover anything mysterious or mesmerizing in a subject no matter the subject or its difficulty level.

I am looking forward to discussing any mutual interests and concerns with you. For further inquiry, my resume, recommendation letters, or proof of assessment or certification/licensure are available upon request.

Latin

From a very early age, from my teen years, I was exposed in Latin, both classical and medieval/patristic/Biblical. That is because I was raised in Greece, though born in NY, and when I went to college back in NY, I didn't even need to take any introductory, not even intermediate, college class for my research in classics & ancient history as I was placed on advanced standing Greek & Latin. I was able to graduate with an MA in History and do a summer fieldwork in Greece using Latin and Greek references and translating Latin and Greek inscriptions into English. Teaching Latin comes to me natural. I am one of the few who learn Latin from an early age instead of taking just college classes as adults. As a language teacher I know that from my students that it is easier and better to learn a language as a child than as an adult. I was raised learning Latin, so it is a second nature to me. Therefore, success is guaranteed.

Microbiology

I have 12 credits in Biology, both undergraduate and graduate and I have taken a class in Microbiology with outstanding success.

Microbiology was always very interesting to me. My mom was a Microbiology Laboratory Assistant in Athens, Greece. We had a microscope at home and I was raised listening to stories about the world of microbiology, lab tests, and the microscope. It is not an accident that laboratory assignments for microbiology class were easy for me, text material sounded familiar and laboratory skills and routines came to me natural.

I have transcripts and a recommendation letter from my microbiology professor available upon request.

Philosophy

I have 6 cr. in philosophy, primarily Greek Philosophy with an emphasis in Plato and Political Philosophy as well as space-time and the relation of Quantum Physics to Philosophy. However, I am an avid reader of philosophy and I am an expert in philosophical counseling. I have combined my professional background of education/teaching, psychology, therapy, and counseling with the Socratic Method and Plato. I have presented in numerous international and national conferences on Plato, Socrates and the Socratic Method applied in Education and Counseling in order to help children and adults with special needs and disabilities. Other professional research interests include: Jung & his philosophy, philosophy of mind and philosophical psychology, psychoanalysis & philosophy, and philosophy of education. My philosophy background is not limited to Greek philosophy, but it also includes Byzantine/Medieval/Patristic philosophy, eastern philosophy, Ethics, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and physics and Space-Time, Theory of Knowledge, Aesthetics, and Metaphysics/Ontology/Epistemology. Success is guaranteed.

Psychology

I have some experience as a therapist & case manager at a Day Habilitation center for young adults with developmental disabilities. I have a bachelors in psychology, a masters in human relations psychology-clinical counseling option (GPA: 4.0) and I am currently close to graduate with another masters in rehabilitation counseling. My current GPA = 4.0. Member of "Psyc Chi" National Honor Society in Psychology. I am ready to begin writing a professional paper (clinical/counseling equivalent of a thesis) on Carl Jung and his analytical psychology. I had one semester of internship in a clinical psychologist's office, trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), counseling, clinical interview and counseling, psychometrics/psychological testing, case management and writing progress notes and psychological reports and observations as well as Neurotherapy, EEG-Neurofeedback, General biofeedback, computer interventions in behavioral therapy for children with ADHD and relacation therapy with HRV monitoring and FDA-approved music specially designed for clinical sessions. In addition, I reveived more training by American Biotec, Inc and "Thought Technologies, Inc" in Neurotherapy, EEG-Neurofeedback, applied psychophysiology and general biofeedback. I have a very strong background in both cognitive & biological psych and neuroscience and also in psychoanalysis/depth-psychology and also humanistic/existential psychology as well. I had in "A" in statistics and I've taken many different classes in quanititative & qualitative methods of research in behavioral sciences, testing, evaluation, appraisal and psychometrics.

Religion

I have a bachelors and a masters in history and some of the courses I took were related to the history of religion, including History of Islam, East Asian History, Indian History, and Medieval Church. Some of the readings were books in Bhuddism, Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. My minor was in Art History, so I have a lot of courses related to religion, including Gothic Art where we learned about Gothic cathedrals, Precolumbian Civilizations, where precolumbian myth and religion were strongly emphasized.

I also have a lot of knowledge and experience in Orthodox Christianity and Greek Mythology/Ancient Greek Religion, as I taught and still teach those courses as part of the Greek curriculum in the Greek parochial schools of New York City. I am also currently a student of the Archdiocesan School of Byzantine Music of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and a byzantine chanter in various churches of NYC, with one year internship at the Holy Trinity Archdiocesan Cathedral (New York, NY). I have a deep theological, historical and liturgical knowledge and experience of Eastern/Orthodox Christian religion and spirituality.

Social Studies

I hold an New York State Initial Certificate in Teaching Social Studies (7-12) and I have taught Social Studies in Middle Schools/Junior High Schools and High Schools in NYC. I have taught Global Studies (history/Geography), American History, US Government, and Economics. I am currently working at a Greek parochial school, but still I teach Greek history, as part of the Greek curriculum. Many of students improved their public school grades in both social studies and Greek due to my systematic and meticulous teaching efforts.

Special Needs

I have experience with students and adults with special needs, including orthopedic disabilities and emotional disturbance/mental/learning disabilities as a substitute and later as a teacher for a number of subjects and grades K-12, especially 7-12, in public schools and parochial school. I have presented in national and international conferences on teaching students with special needs. I have also published articles on teaching students with special needs in my personal blog. I am about to graduate from my third masters in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I have been taught therapeutic and counseling interventions for people with special needs. My GPA in this program is 4.0. Also when I was doing my second masters that was in Human Relations Psychology-Clinical Counseling Option (GPA= 4.0; graduated with distinction), I did one semester internship at a Clinical Psychologist's office in Astoria, NY working with children and adults with special needs. I was trained there in the use of Biofeedback for people with special needs and I was later on trained by American Biotec, Inc and Thought Technologies, Inc in General Biofeedback & EEG-Neurofeedback.

Study Skills

Since I have 4.0 for the last 10 years and I have already three degrees, one bachelors and two masters and I am getting soon a third one, that means I may have developed some strong study skills. Also, as a tutor and teacher, I have experience in instructing my students on how to develop healthy study habits and prepare them for tests. I can help all ages, from K-adult/college. My academic, professional and clinical background in psychology/counseling can help students coping with their performance anxiety and stress as well as communicating between students and parents about study skills development and school/college success.

World History

My expertise as social studies/history teacher is global/world history. I have taught this subject for over 10 years both as a teacher, a substitute, and a tutor. I have a Masters and a Bachelors in history.
