My name is Howard. I supervised a department of more than 30 mathematics teachers in one of New York City's largest high schools for more than 20 years. I've been involved in mathematics education for my entire career and have had more than 25 years of successful experience as a tutor of middle school, high school and college mathematics courses and the math section of the SAT. I am also a math textbook author and editor. I love mathematics and I love to help people learn mathematics.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

I spent 36 years as a mathematics teacher and 22 of those years supervising a department of approximately 30 mathematics teachers. Teaching students how to study was always a priority in our professional development meetings. We emphasized such skills as teaching students how to properly use a textbook, reading the materials in the text before attempting any exercises and writing summary paragraphs as the first part of their assignments to serve as a catalyst to help in identifying key theorems and concepts in a lesson.

Trigonometry

Alg. II and Trigonometry is a fairly advanced course that requires expertise and experience. I have had years of experience teaching it to students at all levels. Even some certified math teachers are not fluent in this subject.
