As an experienced educator at the middle / high school level, I have successful engagements with the emphasis placed on goal setting, prioritizing and event management. These are skills I use personally and professionally. I am equally comfortable teaching one-on-one as well as in the group setting. Tutoring location is flexible.
I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Wantagh School District for over five years teaching the following subjects: physical science, living environment, Italian, and pre-algebra. Privately, I have been tutoring SAT/ACT/GMAT students, middle and high school students in chemistry, algebra, living environment and elementary school students in math.
The parents of the students that I have worked with have been pleased with the one to one attention that I have given their children and with the results. I personalize my instruction to the students' interests to make the subject matter more relevant to their point of reference.
I am passionate about learning and enjoy when the individuals pick up on this enthusiasm and revisit the subject matter we are studying with a new perspective. Mona was the perfect tutor for my son. She was very patient and let him set the pace for the lessons. He was very comfortable with her and was able to express which areas in Geometry he was having trouble. She helped him break problems down so that he was better able to understand what needed to be done. She was always on time and ready to get to work. I also liked that if he ever has a question with homework or was stuck on something he was able to call her for help over the phone. I would recommend Mona to anyone and if my son needed help in another subject she would be my first call. With her help he passed Geometry Regents with no stress at all.
The first meeting with someone new can be a little awkward, but meeting Mona was easy and a pleasure. She worked steadily with my son and really paid attention to his particular issues. I can tell she is very patient and willing to structure her sessions to his skill set. I am looking forward to working with her over the next few months!
Two weeks into the new school year, and my daughter came home with her first 91 on a math test, ever.
UPDATE: My daughter's first quarter grade in Math was a 90! She is so proud, as are we. Thank you, Mona.
Mona was very good at relating to my 10 year old son. She used commonalities in order to form a relationship. My son was nervous at first, but calmed as the session went forward. I look forward to seeing positive results.
Mona worked with my daughter to assist her in taking the CHSEE (Catholic High School Entrance Exam). With Mona's help my daughter was accepted to all three high schools that she applied to and received a partial scholarship, based on her test scores, to two of the three schools. My daughter was well prepared thanks to Mona.
My daughter was very comfortable with Mona and was very satisfied. We are looking forward to our next appointment. THANK YOU MONA!
On our 3rd appointment with Mona. Chemistry is a hard subject and Mona is managing to find a way in helping my daughter grasp the material. Needless to say after my daughter's last lesson she received an extra credit in her chemistry class displaying her knowledge!!! Thanks again Mona!!!
Mona was very nice. She was always on time and she was very patient while working with my son.
Mona really helped me so much thus far! She was patient with me! I am looking forward to looking working with her!
After just two sessions I can see and my son himself can see an improvement. Mona can break it down to simplicity so my son understands problem solving after just two of the sessions. My son is also noticeably more confident.
Finding the right tutor is a very difficult thing to do. Mona's approach to working with my son was in one word impressive. He was apprehensive in getting a tutor but now looks forward to her next lesson. This is a relief for us because we have always felt that learning shouldn't be a chore. Mona has accomplished making this. We could not be happier. Thank you!
Mona continues to help my son achieve his goals of not only passing Biology, and Geometry, but going to the next level. She is patient, and makes his lessons fun, and puts the lesson into terms he understands. My son has a busy schedule and Mona is understanding, and genuinely wants to help. She is a homerun!
THANK YOU MONA!!! We were very concerned about our son passing the Geometry, Science, and Social Study Regents. Mona worked hard with our son up until the day of the Regents. He passed all three! and he, and we could not be happier. We are going to have her help him with the SAT and ACT. His attitude has definitely changed about school, and especially the sciences. Once again thank you for your time, effort and work to make him understand the material.
Mona has helped my son tremendously with his chemistry. He was failing chemistry in the beginning of the school year so we decided to use WyzAnt and we found Mona. She tutored him so well he even passed his chemistry regents. I highly recommend Mona.
Mona has a very different way of teaching my son. She compares math problems to real life situations. Mona is very motivating, upbeat, caring, courteous, and professional. Mona can see where the weaknesses lie, and works to strengthen them. Mona is very accomodating and flexable in working around my son's extra-curricular activities, and is very easy to reach by phone. I highly recommend Mona as a tutor.
Mona's style of tutoring is direct, honest and determined but equally patient, engaging and effective. She addresses the student's overall style and methods of general learning in all areas, not only weakness in the assigned subject and provides solid and comprehensive suggestions, guidance and structure. In only a few lessons, she has been able to deconstruct concepts, processes and applications and the results are impressive. She is responsive, prompt and pleasant and we are excited to continue to work with her.
Mona works well with my daughter. She is very knowledgeable on many subjects. My daughter says she is just what she needs. She is fully prepared and my daughter has no problems calling when she is confused about something they went over.
Patient and takes her time explaining/making sure you understand the material properly before you leave a session with her. Highly recommended!
Mona has a no nonsense caring demeanor that has helped my daughter achieve a better understanding of Algebra. Her confidence as well as her ability is growing at a nice pace thanks to Mona.
My daughter began taking Italian lessons three weeks ago from Mona and she LOVES it! Firstly, finding a tutor was very easy as WyzAnt made the process very simple. I feel like we lucked out by getting Mona who is very knowledgeable, creative and certainly seasoned in this area as she was ready with activities that my daughter loved to engage in. I am more impressed as Mona has great patience (as my daughter is only 5) and is able to keep her engaged and motivated for the entire session. I will definitely continue to use Mona as a tutor for my daughter!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra consists of many of the subject areas that will all have studied since Elementary School. Whether it be ratios, negative and positive numbers, solving for variables, plotting points or computing area or converting units, they all unify and are important to understand when studying Algebra. When working with a student in this discipline, I make sure that the building blocks of Math are strong and then build upon these concepts. I try to use real life examples when doing problems so that the student can see that Algebra plays a strong role in our everyday lives.
Having a strong background in the Biological Sciences, when I am tutoring Chemistry, I can use examples from Biology to help explain different relationships. Chemistry is built upon overlapping concepts starting with the structure of the atom, to the Periodic Table, to types of bonds, Nuclear and Organic Chemistry. I take the basic concepts, make sure that the student understands them and then I build upon these concepts. I use diagrams, charts, and examples from real life to help give the topics in Chemistry different perspectives and help in the learning process.
I have been tutoring the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT for several years. This standardized test emphasizes sentence structure, mechanics and punctuation as well as reading comprehension. I also have been tutoring the ACT which has the same type of emphasis on mechanics and reading. Additionally, having lived in Europe and learned two languages, I also know the importance of speaking and auditory comprehension. I have personal experience in tutoring Italian and what methods work or don't work while trying to become fluent in another language. I feel that I have both the personal and professional experience in being able to help a student learn English as a second language.
I learned Italian while I was going to school in Italy. It was a total immersion course. Even though, there were those who spoke English, I tried to speak only Italian by going to the movies, watching television, sitting in the park and listening to the Italians speaking. I practiced doing crossword puzzles in Italian, reading children's books in Italian and later on more advanced literature as well as medical books in Italian. I did grammar exercises and took Italian lessons. I still read Italian newspapers, listen to Italian programs and still speak Italian.
Since the MCAT is made up of various sections ranging from the Physical and Biological Sciences to Verbal and Writing, it is very important to understand how the test is set up. I have a very strong background in the Biological Sciences and am very comfortable with the Verbal and Writing parts of standardized tests. I am familiar with the organization of the MCATs as well as the basic principles in Science, Verbal and Writing skills. I know how the test is set up and am comfortable with instructing the tactics and techniques in test taking, as I have taken the MCATs and have graduated from Medical School.
I received a Masters in Bio-Nutrition from the University Of Bridgeport where I studied Biochemistry, Nutrition and Disease, Vitamins and their Importance, Physiology, Maternal and Fetal Development and the importance of good Nutrition. I have work experience in nutritional counseling and have lectured on guidelines of moderation, food portions to many civic groups and health agencies.
My approach to the SAT Math is to review the basics of Math. These basics create the foundations for the more advanced problems in Algebra, Geometry, Data Analysis and the other topics tested in the SAT Math section. I work with the student to show them the tactics and techniques for answering the different types of questions.
In the course of my academic studies, I have learned how to take a subject and break it down into its smaller components. I have found that it is easier to learn a more complex topic when the fundamentals are more secure. I am a firm believer in the use of a calendar to prioritize events which then helps in time management. I also work on goal setting and categorizing them according to short term, medium term and long term goals and then what has to be done to achieve these goals. Therefore, I use a calendar for mapping out academic work in order of due date, the work involved and goal settings to help the individual focus on what they want to do and how they can go about achieving their goals.
