I am a substitute teacher, the mom of two school-age boys, and am certified in middle school/high school English by New York State. Before I had children, I taught high school English in Ithaca, NY and am currently teaching here in the Hudson Valley. I also work as a tutor in my home district and have had private students over the years. I grew up in New York City, attended the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, earned my Bachelor's degree from Manhattan College, and my Master's degree from Queens College.
An important aspect of my teaching style includes getting to know the student in order to make connections between the student's life and the school work at hand. I also think it is important to have some laughs while learning! In the area of writing, it is essential to learn about the most common mistakes and work on rough drafts to revise for both content and grammatical errors. Reading for pleasure will help with all subjects in school and especially with writing. It is vital to "hear" those good sentences in one's head. Organization of school papers and learning study methods are also vital to doing well in school.
I provide lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement as I believe we all need to be rewarded and cheered on when working to accomplish our goals!
