Binghamton University (Pre-law and English)
My name is Sharon and I'm an honors student at Binghamton University. I'm majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Law, and English and am taking my LSATs in just a few weeks. I love tutoring and have spent the past three semesters tutoring students at the Binghamton University Writing Initiative. I have experience working with all kinds of students - from students entering their first year of college to graduate students working on their capstones. Having gone to a math and science high school in New York City, I am confident in my ability to tutor most subjects, but I am especially passionate about English, philosophy, and political science. Working as a tutor for Binghamton University has given me a lot of experience and a lot of time to consider my tutoring philosophy. I firmly believe that an effective tutor is one who helps students learn and achieve their full potential. As someone who loves to learn, I want to share my love for learning with others and that is part of what makes me so passionate and effective at tutoring. At the Writing Initiative, I developed academic relationships with students who would come back to see me week after week - seeing progress is an incredible thing and that's what I strive for as a tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have played on the piano for fourteen years and have experience teaching at an international piano camp in Vermont where I worked with students from the ages of 6 to 16 and at all levels of experience from beginner to advanced.
I am currently a senior at Binghamton University, double majoring in philosophy, politics, and law, and English literature. I have spent the past three years studying political science (with a particular emphasis on international law and human rights).
At the Writing Initiative at Binghamton University, where I have worked as a tutor for the past three semesters, working with students on their political science papers and helping them with political science has been a particular passion of mine. I have been enrolled in a variety of advanced political science electives and classes, and have a wide variety of general knowledge on the field.
When it comes to excelling at standardized tests, I have a very particular tutoring philosophy. First and foremost, learning the structure of the test is incredibly important to me. As someone who graduated from a top NYC high school and always scored highly on standardized tests, the most important part of tutoring for the Regents is not just knowing and understanding the subject material but also understanding the structure and format of the test and what test-makers are looking for. Years of taking Regents exams means that I am an expert on the actual structure of the exam and question/answer types; further, as a tutor at the Writing Initiative at my university, I know what methods work best when it comes to helping high school students excel and I know how to tutor them to help them in areas that they are struggling in.
