I am a licensed CPA in two states. I have taught accounting at the college level and now devote my professional time exclusively as a tutor. My diverse accounting experience in the business world, both as a public accountant as well as controller and CFO, provides an added context for students taking accounting courses. I specialize in tutoring accounting, middle school and high school math, and SAT test prep.
Many of my accounting students are tutored online and because of the technology, the sessions are both seamless and enjoyable. I use Power Point presentations to present information, screen sharing to go over homework problems that I have done, and white board presentations.
I am patient, experienced, and knowledgeable.
In my career as a CPA, I had to use and continuously develop the following skills:
Knowing how to effectively question, learn, take initiative, be curious, research, problem solve, and process information and knowledge are priceless skills, not just in academics but in the larger world.
I find these to be the major challenges particularly for accounting and math students.
Often the secret is that subjects need to be broken down into very bite size pieces.
Half of successful test-taking involves strategy and becoming very familiar with the test itself, and the other half involves reading, problem solving skills, and adequate knowledge.
Tutoring sessions can be fun and the time can fly. Often I transform the session into an experience where both the student and I work together as a team to solve problems and to understand new material. This approach seems to engage and motivate the student often more than a traditional teaching approach. But sometimes that approach is more appropriate and I tailor each session to what is needed at that time.
Accounting I is a system and also like a giant puzzle. The challenge for students is to discover each piece before they can really see the whole. This can be an exciting journey if taught as such and if the teacher appreciates the difficulties students tend to have. In teaching Accounting I for several years to business and non-business adult students, I discovered an ability to make it relevant, exciting, and yes, even fun, for my students.
Intermediate Accounting is a challenge for students following Accounting I. Intermediate Accounting requires the students to begin to learn to think independently, deeply, and to problem solve. It is a demanding subject and the key to continuing in advancing in accounting studies. It develops the thinking and work skills you need to be an accountant in the real world. It requires a time commitment that is quite demanding. Seek tutoring help for it early so you don't fall too far behind. Succeeding in it can be a challenge, but also rewarding.
Managerial accounting shifts the student who has had the previous courses into the detailed world of cost, volume, profit relationships, contribution margin, breakeven point, budgeting, and variance analysis. It is very different from the prior two courses, and requires a significant shift in perspective. Sometimes students initially need help understanding that shift, and then help with learning the working tools and thought processes that go with it. It also requires a time and effort commitment.
I have always loved math. It is a system that builds on itself. It requires developing and using the imagination, which is a great thing to learn. Learning how to think and how to solve problems is central to algebra, as well as learning the rules of algebra. The kind of thinking that is necessary to problem solve is also the kind of thinking that can help you in all your subjects and in test taking. My tutoring helps you in both ways.
My knowledge in business is academic and experiential as I have taught computer, accounting, organizational courses, as well as my own work experience in companies. In my role of Director of Finance and Administration, I directly managed a range of operational areas including retail, technology procurement, human resources, employee training, accounting and finance, and worked closely with marketing and fundraising. My strengths as a tutor include my ability to explain concepts as well as challenge students to find their strengths. My background as a CPA, as a teacher, as a life coach, and as a counselor all contribute to my understanding and knowledge.
We all love storytelling. That's what movies are and most of us love movies. Well, literature is also storytelling. It also requires the use of our imaginations. Movies show us everything and then touch our minds and hearts, which makes us experience our humanness. But it is quite passive. Reading literature requires more active effort, which is a success building skill for life. Having the confidence that you can learn to understand something that seems challenging is a great skill to have. So learning to read literature with enjoyment and with active participation and comprehension is an important tool for success.
I have always loved math. It is a system that builds on itself. Learning how to think and how to solve problems is central to both prealgebra and algebra. The kind of thinking that is necessary to problem solve is also the kind of thinking that can help you in all your subjects and particularly in test taking. So my tutoring really helps you in both ways.
Beginning Quickbooks, Intermediate, and Advanced are offered. My experience includes teaching it to individuals in the classroom as well as to organizations. My accounting background adds to my understanding of how it works, and helps students learn how to use it more easily.
Success on the math part of the SAT requires preparation, knowing how to read the question, determining the process required to the correct answer, and knowing what mathematical rules to apply. Sometimes, even when you don't know the rules, there are ways to figure out the answer. There are also test taking strategies that can add to a score. In all the tests I've ever taken, I've been successful applying all of these concepts. My tutoring approach encompasses working with you using all of these.
To succeed on the SAT reading section, you must adequately prepare. Success on this section involves learning how to read the questions in a careful, specific way, and applying a particular thought process to determine the correct answer. You can also learn how to sometimes select the correct answer, even when you don't know what it is. Success on all standardized tests is partly achieved through reading abilities and strategy. I can help you with all of these factors. I have always used them to score well on tests.
Success on the SAT writing section partly involves knowing how to carefully read the question. You must understand clearly what the instructions are asking. Then you must develop a way to formulate your answer. The best way to accomplish this sometimes is through outlining or diagramming how you will respond in some way that makes sense to you: starting from A to get to B, and then conclude with C. You also need to be able to write grammatically. I can help you with all of these elements.
I have spent over 20 years preparing taxes for individuals, C and S corporations, partnerships, trusts. I am experienced using computerized software as well as manual preparation. Knowing how to find and interpret, and justify a position requires learning to think in a particular way. I have taught federal income taxation at the college level as well as at the career school level.
Writing is such a powerful communication tool. I am using it right now to connect to you. I view writing as a journey in finding one's own voice. Writing can be a powerful way to communicate with others and oneself. Learning to express oneself clearly is an important skill and you can get better at it.
In writing academic papers, organization and planning are key elements. I am experienced writing essays, papers, and theses. I know it can seem intimidating, but like anything else, if broken down into steps, it becomes clearer and easier.
