Hello! My name is Chris and I am a 3rd year student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I'm pursuing a dual degree in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, as well as a minor in Psychology. I've been a tutor since high school, and have helped my peers in college level courses. I've also tutored students younger than me in math courses they were struggling in, such as Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry, and helped them prep for Math on the SAT and AP tests. I have tutored a variety of student types, ranging from those who want an A to those who just want to pass. I'm enthusiastic about the subjects I teach and I have a flexible schedule.
My Teaching Style:
I've found that the best way to teach math efficiently is to step into my student's shoes and see the problem as he or she does. By asking the student to work me through the problem, I can see exactly where confusion arises, as well as how to improve the student's analysis of the problem. This allows me to know exactly how to teach my students how to solve problems effectively and with confidence.
For the problems that the student has not learned yet, I first walk through the steps needed to solve it, and make sure he or she understands the reasoning behind each step. Once the student has sufficiently grasped how to handle the problems he or she needed help with, I have practice problems that the student can do for the next session. Also, if there is a shortcut for solving the problem, I will show it to the student so that such problems can quickly be solved on exams.
For students looking to prepare for the SAT, I have strategies and tricks that some companies charge a small fortune to teach 1-on-1. Whether you're a slow writer, have difficulty with the reading comprehension portion, or don't know how to tackle the more difficult math problems, I'll help you learn and strategize according to your own style to optimize your score.
Outside of the Sessions:
I'm very accessible outside of tutoring sessions. My students and their parents should feel free to contact me anytime by email as well as phone and text message regarding a question on practice problems or any other concerns. I believe a friendly relationship between me and my students is the healthiest for a learning environment; I've found it helps them grasp the subject quickly, and with less stress than when in the classroom.
