My name is Baise and I'm a teacher of English as a second language. I've been teaching for over 12 years, including seven years at one of the largest language schools in Manhattan. At the language school, I taught high intermediate-advanced classes of ESL to a diverse class of multi-national students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The school’s main focus, and mine as well, is a student-centered learning environment that uses a variety of methodologies, such as the Communicative Approach, Direct Method, Total Physical Response and Cooperative Learning.
In addition to my teaching experience in New York, I also worked as an ESL teacher and Director of Studies at a language school in Istanbul, Turkey. As an ESL teacher, I give equal emphasis to developing my students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, but also focus on vocabulary development and correct grammar usage. In my conversation classes, I strive to lead my students toward taking more responsibility for their learning, by giving them more control over the topics and by teaching and practicing conversation and communication strategies.
My teaching style is best described as eclectic. While I am always organized and focused, I vary my instructional methodologies to incorporate diverse activities and material to engage and interest students. By acknowledging the many different learning styles, I easily establish and maintain an excellent rapport with students. As a result, there is a strong level of trust that develops which consequently allows me to provide direction in working toward shared goals and objectives.
While working as the Director of Studies at the English language school in Istanbul, I was also in charge of supervising and guiding teachers in their teaching duties, organizing regular teacher meetings and workshops while also helping to ensure that the overall program was fully implemented.
I enjoy teaching and meeting new students very much and get satisfaction of seeing my students improve their language skills and succeed in their goals. In addition to being fluent in German and Turkish, I have set my sights on Italian and/or French! :)
Last but not least, during my years in college and grad school, I have tutored kids in elementary school math to help me through college. As I've enjoyed this experience and realized that I'm good at it, I continue to tutor kids in math as well. :)
