If you are looking for a tutor who can not only help you ace exams but the ins and outs of education from elementary school to college, then you have found the right person!
I have been in the test prepping and consulting business for more than 6 years. I have led one-on-one tutoring sessions and large groups for many types of classes ranging from the TOEFL to SAT2 Biology. Some of my students have gone on to amazing colleges such as Duke, Stanford, and Cornell to name a few.
Over the years, I have run across hundreds of students from varying backgrounds with different learning habits and challenges. I must say I've learned from them as much as they have learned from me. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and constantly think about how I can improve not only the test scores of my students, but to guide them to do better in all that they do.
I can help you with:
SAT I all sections. Yes, there are tons and tons of books with all different strategies. Some of those strategies work and some simply aren't effective. For instance, did you know that the Sparknotes books are full of typos and errors? Did you know that the Fisk SAT I prep books aren't very accurate? I have all the books and I have dissected all of them question by question. I can customize which books and questions will work for you to improve your scores in a short amount of time.
TOEFL. I am an immigrant myself. I didn't have to take the TOEFL, as I came to the U.S. when I was in elementary school. However, as I was constantly immersed in a society of immigrants, I naturally became somewhat of an expert in teaching English to immigrants - my mother and father to name two. Furthermore, as a consultant, I have extensive experience with international students. I have helped them get into some top colleges and I know that everything starts with TOEFL.
SAT 2 subject tests. I have four years of experience teaching SAT II Biology and Math Subject level tests. I have never had a student dip below 700 on any of the SAT II subject tests for the last four years. SAT 2 subject tests tend to be challenging for many students and they really shouldn't be! I can make it easy for you by explaining the concepts you absolutely must know to ace the exams in a simple way.
College essays and consulting. I have been a lead consultant at an education consulting firm for 3 years. I know the college process thoroughly. I know about the major summer camp programs and how to prepare for them. I know what scholarships looks good and how to prep for them. I know what colleges are excellent for the different majors. I can help you write that perfect essay and impress the interviewer.
General school help in all subjects. I can cover all subjects up to high school - biology, chem, physics, mathematics, English etc. My belief is that students simply need to be taught good studying skills to excel. If the material is made to be fun and exciting, all students can excel.
+ more. Just ask!
Thanks and looking forward to working with you and learning from you.
ACT English is often mistaken as the "English that's closer to school English."
It's not. It's actually a little bit more challenging than the SAT I Writing section for some individuals. There are, fortunately, only a set of questions and grammar rules that's on the ACT Eng. If you give me a month or so, I will get you the score that you want and need.
ACT Math is a bit more extensive than the SAT I math in that it contains a bit of trigonometry. However, it is also a bit more straight forward than the SAT I math in that there are less "tricks."
I'll show you how to time manage and to get the top score you need.
Bio SAT 2 is one of the harder science exams. It is because it requires that the student retain a great deal of information before taking the test.
Still, the good news is that the questions on the bio SAT 2 are somewhat set. In other words, as long as you know which information and which topics to focus on you are golden!
I have over 4 years of Bio SAT II experience and have taken the test myself (each year :) ). I have always received 800 and am very familiar with the test. Let me help.
I was the head consultant at a prep firm located in Little Neck NY. I have been a consultant for 4 years and know the in's and out's of the college application process, scholarships, variety of different camp and internship programs etc..
My specialty was college applications - more specifically, I was the head consultant for college essays.
Usually this is a subject covered in 9th grade mathematics. In fact, in NYS there is a regents for Geometry.
The tricky part about geometry is that it contains "logic and proofs." These two topics are different from the pretty straightforward Algebra I concepts students learn in 8th grade.
But with a bit of practice and guidance, you will be able to ace the regents and learn the important concepts in geometry.
I took care of ISEE, SSAT, Catholic High School Test, and the Specialized High School Test curricula for two years at a learning center.
I, myself, am a graduate of a specialized high school and have taken the test with high marks (I was ranked 6th in the city).
I am very comfortable with all specialized exams and the formats.
Korean is my native language.
I am Korean and speak, read, write Korean fluently.
In fact, I met my college foreign language requirement with Korean (as ironic as that is since it is my first language).
This is a test that is taken in 11th grade. Most schools make the students take the test in 9th and 10th grade as well. However, the results from 9th and 10th do not count.
The results from the 11th grade test (October), does count. If you do well on it, you will be a National Merit Scholar! And of course that's awesome.
Plus, it's not so bad to get an early start prepping for the PSAT as it is quite similar to the SAT.
Reading is the basis of all great learning.
Any new skill or knowledge requires reading and understanding the material. I cannot stress how important this skill is for younger students as most of the reading and learning skills are picked up in elementary and middle school.
Once my students pick up on reading, I challenge them to read between the lines to extract information. When they can do that, I teach them how to skim to get to the core concepts.
I graduated from a specialized high school in NYC. I have gotten no less than 98 on all my regents. I am also aware that the regents policy has changed and has the tendency to change every four years or so. However, the material the tests cover are the same.
I can cover all science and math regents.
SAT I Math is quite easy if you are a naturally better in math.
However, it does contain an oddball mix of questions (especially towards the end with the "harder" questions). You have to prepare specifically for those.
Furthermore, there are shortcuts to every single one of the SAT I questions! If you do them the hard way, you'll suffer the consequences. If you let me teach you the short cuts, the thing will be a breeze.
Here is the bad news you need to look out for though - the curve on the SAT I math portion is brutal! So do not make mistakes!
This is often the most challenging portion of the SAT because it requires an extensive knowledge of vocabulary words that are not commonly used. In addition to the vocabs, you have to learn to read quickly and to summarize important facts. If that's not enough, some of the passages can be quite boring or unfamiliar to many students.
Have no fear though.. there is a solution!
Like all tests, there is a key to the reading portion of the SAT I. I'll teach you!
I think this section is the easiest of the three SAT I sections.
You'll understand why after you have a sit down session with me. But here's the hint, the same rules are tested and there's only a handful of them!
Trigonometry is often covered in 10th grade. Nevertheless, it is needed for PreCalculus and Caluclus.
You will have to get very comfortable with the usage of the trig identities and the fundamental concepts in trigonometry.
I can help you simply the concepts and to pass not only the regents, but other tests that contain trig.
(It's not as hard as it looks...) :)
