I would like to offer my services as a private tutor of Mandarin Chinese, standardized test preparation, and other academic subjects. I have been very fortunate to study Chinese with native speakers since kindergarten at the US’s premiere institutions for Chinese language learning. I am an experienced tutor, and I offer dedicated personal instruction and individualized learning plans that make use of a multi-faceted approach to language learning to dramatically accelerate and improve students' language proficiency.
I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese and have a native level of pronunciation. Unlike many Chinese tutors, however, I can also offer the skills of a native English speaker and personal insight into the Chinese language acquisition process at all levels. I studied Chinese at the prestigious Breck School in Minnesota from age five through high school, under the tutelage of an internationally renowned Chinese language authority. I continued my Chinese study at Middlebury College, earning a Chinese minor. Middlebury has the nation's foremost undergraduate Chinese department, and it is the destination of US government agencies for foreign language training.
I currently tutor for different agencies in New York City, and I was recently hired to be a standby substitute Chinese teacher at the Spence School. I have experience teaching Chinese in various academic settings, and I have taught ages 3 to 72. I have been fingerprinted and background checked by the New York City Department of Education, and I can offer excellent references.
I teach with intelligent empathy, dynamic structure, and incisively applied knowledge, and my teaching method effectively addresses all aspects of foreign language acquisition. I am able to teach absolute beginners in Chinese, continue and assist within the curriculum of a student's current Chinese class, or provide acceleration and new material that will dramatically improve upon a student's current language proficiency. The many facets of both oral and written language skills are improved in each tutoring session though different, targeted activities.
A typical tutoring session is centered upon a lesson from the student's current Chinese class or one which I furnish independently. Each tutoring session follows the structure below, flexibly tailored to each students needs:
We first do an overview of the lesson
Then review the vocabulary
Have an oral dictation test on the new words
Go through some written lesson exercises
Record a lesson dialogue (so the student is able to audially and orally review on their own)
Read a pertinent passage for listening comprehension
Perform an oral question and answer session
Do a relevant role playing exercise
Play various Chinese games or songs.
Because an understanding of the ancient and unique Chinese culture is seminal to effective communication in Chinese, each lesson ends by studying a Chinese proverb, or Chengyu. Chengyu are typically four to eight word long phrases that are used frequently in Chinese speaking to convey profound, idiomatic meanings.
I have a relatively flexible schedule and could begin tutoring right away, and I am able to tutor students in their homes or at libraries. A typical tutoring session is two hours long, but I can accommodate sessions ranging from one to four hours in length. My services are also available to any adult learners who may be interested. I charge a low standard hourly rate. Please do not hesitate to ask if I can provide any more information. I look forward to speaking with you soon. Thank you very much for your consideration.
