Hi, my name is Matthew. I am recent graduate of SUNY Albany with a Bachelor's in Physics and I'm interested in spending some of my free time doing what I love - tutoring/teaching Math and Science. I tutored for 2 years semesters at Albany High School through the Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP). Most students required help with Algebra, Trig, and Geometry homework and other times I helped with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as well. My experiences were a little atypical because I usually worked with students one-on-one with their friends sitting at the same table, but that just meant the other tutors and I had to be a little more patient and work a little harder keeping students focused on the task at hand.
As far as my methods, there's a lot that goes into a tutoring session so my approach for each one was a little different depending on the student's abilities and personality (and even just what's going on in their lives at the time). Most students work better when they're comfortable talking to the tutor so I always tried to establish a little rapport before jumping right into the work. For students that were struggling, I tried to go as slowly as possible to make the material more manageable. A lot of the time I was more like a coach, pacing students so they didn't get ahead of themselves and get discouraged when things got a bit harder or when they made mistakes. In my own studies I've seen that rushing ahead can create problems in the future, so I always tried to lay the foundation as carefully and clearly as possible, especially with math.
In general, I tried to give students enough space to attempt things on their own because I knew I wouldn't always be there to guide them. I've read that the goal of tutoring is to make a student an independent learner and that's a view I've come to firmly believe in (to tutor yourself out of business so to speak). So with that in mind, I've usually leaned towards a more hands off approach, except when a student is significantly confused and becoming frustrated/discouraged. Also, it never hurts to inject a little humor and wonder into sessions to keep students engaged and motivated so I try to take those opportunities when I see them.
If any of that sounds like a good fit, don't hesitate to contact me!
I passed all my regents with above a 90. I'm very confident with the material that's on the Math A and Math B regents, and the material on the Physics regents. The materials for these regents are available online, and I believe I can confidently assist a student in any weak areas and help them build confidence for the test. (Tutoring in other regents is possible, but would require brief review to be better prepared. However I'm looking to mainly tutor math and science.)
