I have been working within the Deaf community for over 22 years. I was a teacher of the deaf for 15 years, later changing careers to become a sign language interpreter. I have devoted my life and my work to fights for Deaf rights, educating of Deaf children and educating the hearing community about Deaf Culture. I have been a professor at St. John's University for over 8 years. I believe everyone should know sign language. I believe anyone can learn it. I have developed my own curricula and hands on approach to teaching sign language to children and adults. I believe that although I am not deaf, I have the resources, knowledge and experience in teaching American Sign Language. I look at the person, reasons for learning the language and access to the Deaf community. This information helps develop my lesson plans and materials needs to teach.
I have worked with various students, many of them foreign to English. I have used many types of curricula to help teach English structure. I worked in a Deaf school for 23 years where English was the second language for the Student. I am able to share, create and develop materials needed for instructional purposes. I am able to understand the intended words of the consumer and make corrections where needed. I am comfortable teaching those from other countries as well as children who are learning the English language. I have a MA degree in reading which has helped me in my area of ESL teaching.
