I have been working within the Deaf community for over 22 years. I was a teacher of the deaf for 15 years, later changing careers to become a sign language interpreter. I have devoted my life and my work to fights for Deaf rights, educating of Deaf children and educating the hearing community about Deaf Culture. I have been a professor at St. John's University for over 8 years. I believe everyone should know sign language. I believe anyone can learn it. I have developed my own curricula and hands on approach to teaching sign language to children and adults. I believe that although I am not deaf, I have the resources, knowledge and experience in teaching American Sign Language. I look at the person, reasons for learning the language and access to the Deaf community. This information helps develop my lesson plans and materials needs to teach.
