Patient, resourceful tutor with a wide range of experience

Hello parents and students.

My name is Marie. I am a patient, positive and resourceful person who enjoys helping my students gain mastery over those subjects they find challenging.

I hold a masters degree in liberal studies, and I have worked for many years as a substitute teacher and tutor. I have taught young children math, reading and writing. I have also team-taught math, science and job skills to teens at risk of dropping out of high school. My grade-school teaching history ranges from kindergarten to 12th grade, and I have handled classes with a wide range of student abilities and behaviors. In addition, I have experience teaching adults college mathematics, consisting of algebra I topics, and computer applications II, covering Microsoft Excel and Access.

In general, I favor a "hands-on" approach to teaching that involves a lot of interaction between the tutor and student, with concrete experiences in addition to subject specific worksheets. However, my specific methods vary according to the subject being taught and the learning style of the student. In general, I will not give up until I have found a way to help my student to learn the material.

Reading

The topics I will focus on as a Reading Tutor include: building vocabulary, using resources, mastering pronunciation and enunciation, sounding out words and/or recognizing unusually spelled words, cadence, reading aloud, and generally increasing confidence in the student's "reading style"

Writing

The topics I will cover as a Writing Tutor include:
1) Organizing thoughts into logical and concise sentences and paragraphs.
2) Using technology to aid in and improve quality of writing.
3) Developing confidence in writing style.
4) Expanding vocabulary and knowledge base to create a more engaging "read."
5) Creating a formula which produces quality assignments within a reasonable time-frame.
6) Employing techniques to effectively proof-read and edit the final product...

Proofreading

Topics I will cover as a "Proofreading" tutor will include:
1) Using software (such as MS Word) to aid in excellent paper-writing
2) Developing an "eye" as well as an "ear" for incorrect, awkward or otherwise ugly usage
3) Editing work to eliminate redundancy of concepts or specific words
4) Organizing paragraphs to provide optimal flow of thoughts
5) Creating an interesting and engaging "read"

Elementary Math

Topics covered will be basic number definitions, names and descriptions of shapes, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Students will use manipulatives such as plastic coins and blocks, as well as visual tools such as number lines and graphs to increase their grasp of concepts.
Varied approaches will be taken to help the student to gain mastery over those mathematical principles they find particularly challenging.
