In an attempt to supplement the often lacking information supplied to students in the public and private school system, I tutor my students in a way that helps them truly understand the material without editing out material that schools feel is necessary, which could be quite vital for students to learn the material.
In addition to supplementing the school system, a goal for my students is to excel further than merely at what they are learning at the time, but rather to become self-sustaining, and not merely with passing grades, but at a level of excellence. Often times my students have gone from nearly failing their classes to achieving high grades on their examinations, in addition to actually understanding the material, rather than using the rote method often used in schools which keep the students from internalizing the material.
Being a graduate of a technical high school, and having had various discussions with their administration and instructors throughout my time there, I have a firm grasp on many aspects of the education system, both in terms of the way students are accepted to the specialized high schools (via the SHSAT) and the way colleges view students, allowing me to instruct my students in the optimum way to present themselves to their colleges of choice. My time at the technical high school resulted in me being offered numerous full tuition scholarships to colleges of my choice, in part due to my SAT scores (Verbal: 640/800, Math: 780/800) including my top choice at the time, The Cooper Union For The Advancement Of Science And Art, for a degree in Electric Engineering. The Cooper Union is one of the hardest schools in the world to be accepted to, and one of the most prestigious, as it merely enrolls 25 students per discipline per year, and I was one of those 25 for Electric Engineering, and it accepts applicants for this world renowned school worldwide. I attended The Cooper Union after the completion of my high school career for roughly a year and a half, however due to it missing an element I was looking for in the school when I first applied which they presented as having, the aspect of audio engineering, I have since transferred from that school to the College Of Staten Island. I am now a Music Technology Major finishing up my degree within the coming year with an intent to attend a Masters program in the Music Business with a Music Technology focus at NYU starting Fall of 2013. I still retain numerous scholarships which require a yearly renewal and I hold approximately a 3.7 GPA and recently received a near perfect score on the GRE (Verbal: 162/170, Math: 169/170, Writing: 5.5/6). My experiences throughout high school and college allow me a perspective which lets me assist my students in achieving their goals in the best possible way.
My methods include catering to the form of learning of the student, be it auditory, visual, or kinesthetic, while reinforcing all styles throughout; working with the student to be able to achieve solutions to questions without merely posing the question then giving the solution, as the "journey" in many ways is more important than the end result; supplying numerous examples to be answered by the student in and out of the session to reinforce their experience with numerous types of questions; and many other methods.
I have tutored in all these subjects at one point or another, all achieving a high success rate with each student:
Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, SAT II, etc); SAT Prep (Primarily English & Math); ACT Prep (Primarily English, Math, & Science); Physics (Regents & SAT II); Music Theory; Electronics; C++; and Russian Language.
Recent tutoring successes, especially in SAT Prep, have resulted in students receiving hefty scholarships (up to $50,000 a year for some) to colleges including Gettysburg College, Boston University, Drexel University, Rutgers University, Stony brook, Drew, Montclair, The College Of New Jersey, Hunter College, College Of Staten Island, Ithaca College, St. John's University, Michigan State University, Wagner College, Brooklyn College and many others. In addition to scholarships, they were also accepted to many of their top pick schools, which provided scholarships to them as well.
