ACT English
The ACT English exam consists of 75 questions that test your knowledge of grammar and usage. You will have to fix errors in passages and maybe comment on the passage as a whole.
There are strategies to understand how the questions are constructed, what they are looking for and how to eliminate wrong answers.
ACT Reading
The ACT Reading exam has 40 questions that must be answered in 35 minutes. There will be four areas covered: fictional prose, humanities, social studies, and natural science. The reading can be detailed and questions difficult but if you practice strategies that I can teach you, the reading and questions will be more manageable and you will be able to manage time, use process of elimination to find the right answers and improve your score.
American History
United States History and Government in New York is the study of U.S. history and government from the 17th century to the present. Students are introduced to political, social, economic and cultural developments and interactions. The following topics and themes are covered:
Constitutional principles, institutions of government, foreign policy, economic systems and their political impact, immigration and diversity, citizenship, civil rights and liberties, reform movements, and the historical significance of science and technology.
The course concludes with the NYS Regents exam which consists of 50 multiple choice questions, a thematic essay and a third section of document based questions which require short answers and an essay based upon the documents studied.
ASVAB
I am an experienced teacher and tutor for test preparation. I have helped military applicants with the AFQT portion of the exam which covers science, math and English to obtain higher scores. To score well it takes practice and a willingness to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. Math must be practiced for improvement. Finally, the tests are very predictable and practice with old tests really helps.
Elementary (K-6th)
I have worked with elementary students as a classroom teacher and tutor. As a middle school social studies and English teacher I often worked with students whose reading levels were well below grade level, I am well aware of the importance of the educational building blocks presented in K-6, especially phonics.
English
I have worked as a teacher and tutor in all aspects of the English language acquisition for a number of years and really enjoy the work. I have helped young children to read and write better. I have worked at City University with adults who had difficulty with reading and writing. I have also taught English as a second language in New York and Europe.
I work very hard to meet the needs of each student and design lessons that improve their English skills for school and the workplace.
ESL/ESOL
I am an experienced ESL instructor with City University of New York. My undergraduate degree is in English and I am working on ESL certification at City University. I have taught ESL in California, Europe and here in New York. I have extensive background in all areas of language acquisition: spoken (pronunciation), written, reading comprehension and listening skills. I have worked as a one to one tutor with excellent results for the needs of the student in question. Although I am now working with adults, I previously taught English Language Arts to middle and high school students in California and New York. I held provisional certification in secondary English and adult ESL with the State of New York.
I am available for assignments in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island and will travel to your home or business or convenient location for tutorials.
European History
I have taught and tutored world and European history for improved course grades and standardized testing across the grades and college entrance. I understand and can teach the concepts required for multiple choice questions and essay writing.
Grammar
I am an English grammar expert and have helped students from elementary through adult education programs learn the fine points of the rules and usage. I have taught and tutored native language students and English language learners with excellent results.
Literature
I taught literature at the middle and high school levels and as well as adult levels of literacy.
I have a degree in English Literature. I know how to analyze the questions on the SAT English subject exam and NYS English Regents and can present different strategies for students to reach their potential on the exams.
Phonics
Phonics is a method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning the phonetic values of letters, letter groups and syllables. I have a BA in English and a JD. I have used this method with children and adults with varied exercises to learn the sounds starting with simple words and growing the vocabulary. I believe this is the best method to learn English and develop good reading and comprehension skills.
PSAT
The PSAT helps students prepare for the SAT exam, the most common college entrance exam. It provides feedback to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as information about colleges and universities. A very high scores on the test can also qualify students to scholarships for college.
The test is a little over 2 hours and contained two 25 minute critical reading section; two 25 minutes math sections and one 30 minute writing skills section.
I have worked with students to prepare for this test and the SAT with very good results for instilling confidence and improving testing scores.
Reading
My degree is in English and I taught ELA in elementary and middle school. I found in the classroom and as a tutor that each child has different problems learning to read. An assessment of their skills reveals where the difficulty is. I have used phonics training to help students decode words and their meaning. I teach strategies for improving reading comprehension and retention of material. I have an excellent understanding of English grammar and proper sentence construction.
Regents
I have a BA in English and JD in Law. I have taught social studies and English in NYC public schools. I have taught GED students for the general equivalency diploma in NYC in English and Social Studies. I am an experienced Regents tutor in American History, Global Studies and of course English. I employ different techniques, depending of a students ability and difficult areas.
SAT Reading
The SAT critical reading tests two things: reading and vocabulary skills. The comprehension questions examine your ability to: find the main idea or "big picture" of the passage; draw inferences and conclusions; find the meaning of certain words in a passage among other things. The vocabulary questions test your ability to find the correct meaning of words in the passage and almost always require a secondary meaning for the word.
This may sound difficult but with practice and guidance, you will be able to find the right answers from the multiple choices available. The SAT is consistent and repeats the same type of questions from exam to exam.
SAT Writing
The SAT writing section consists of two parts: an essay and grammar. The essay is the first section on the test. You will have 25 minutes to write it. With practice, you can be prepared with life experiences and literary examples to construct your persuasive essay.
The grammar will cover just 15 different areas from verb tense to relative clauses. Again, practice will help you to identify mistakes and use process of elimination to select the correct answer from the choices provided.
Social Studies
I have taught Social Studies in both public and private schools and helped students successfully pass state mandated testing in middle and high school in both California and New York.
It is the study of the social sciences and humanities and includes the systematic study of information, skills, and concepts from the disciplines of history, geography, political science, economics, etc. with attention also given to connections among the peoples and nations of the world, the effect of science and technology on society and the ways to practice good citizenship. Social studies helps young people develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
World History
The Global History and Geography Regents exam is divided into three parts with a three-hour time limit to complete.
Part I - 50 standard multiple-choice questions with four answer choices.
Part II - One thematic essay question. This essay must be well organized, include an introduction, several paragraphs addressing a given task, and a conclusion.
Part III A - Eight short answer questions, each accompanied by a document. You are required to answer all of the questions using the information supplied in the matching document.
Part III B - Document Based Essay. You are required to write a well-organized essay that includes an introduction, several paragraphs addressing a given task, and a conclusion, using evidence from at least four of the accompanying documents to support your response.
There are techniques to attack each of the parts when preparing for the exam. I can help you learn how to find the right answers for the multiple choice. The essay section requires practice ahead of time with the Global thematic concepts and outlining points before writing in order to have concise and organized product. In many respect part III is the easiest part of the exam. I can show you how to use your time and expand your short answers into a high scoring essay.
