I love teaching all aspects of English, ESL and Social Studies. I have over 15 years experience as a teacher and tutor. I have a BA in English and a JD. European History

Reading

My degree is in English and I taught ELA in elementary and middle school. I found in the classroom and as a tutor that each child has different problems learning to read. An assessment of their skills reveals where the difficulty is. I have used phonics training to help students decode words and their meaning. I teach strategies for improving reading comprehension and retention of material. I have an excellent understanding of English grammar and proper sentence construction.

SAT Reading

The SAT critical reading tests two things: reading and vocabulary skills. The comprehension questions examine your ability to: find the main idea or "big picture" of the passage; draw inferences and conclusions; find the meaning of certain words in a passage among other things. The vocabulary questions test your ability to find the correct meaning of words in the passage and almost always require a secondary meaning for the word.

SAT Writing

The SAT writing section consists of two parts: an essay and grammar. The essay is the first section on the test. You will have 25 minutes to write it. With practice, you can be prepared with life experiences and literary examples to construct your persuasive essay.

The grammar will cover just 15 different areas from verb tense to relative clauses. Again, practice will help you to identify mistakes and use process of elimination to select the correct answer from the choices provided.

ASVAB

I am an experienced teacher and tutor for test preparation. I have helped military applicants with the AFQT portion of the exam which covers science, math and English to obtain higher scores. To score well it takes practice and a willingness to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension. Math must be practiced for improvement. Finally, the tests are very predictable and practice with old tests really helps.

PSAT

The PSAT helps students prepare for the SAT exam, the most common college entrance exam. It provides feedback to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as information about colleges and universities. A very high scores on the test can also qualify students to scholarships for college.

The test is a little over 2 hours and contained two 25 minute critical reading section; two 25 minutes math sections and one 30 minute writing skills section.

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading exam has 40 questions that must be answered in 35 minutes. There will be four areas covered: fictional prose, humanities, social studies, and natural science. The reading can be detailed and questions difficult but if you practice strategies that I can teach you, the reading and questions will be more manageable and you will be able to manage time, use process of elimination to find the right answers and improve your score.

ACT English

The ACT English exam consists of 75 questions that test your knowledge of grammar and usage. You will have to fix errors in passages and maybe comment on the passage as a whole.

There are strategies to understand how the questions are constructed, what they are looking for and how to eliminate wrong answers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with elementary students as a classroom teacher and tutor. As a middle school social studies and English teacher I often worked with students whose reading levels were well below grade level, I am well aware of the importance of the educational building blocks presented in K-6, especially phonics.

Phonics

Phonics is a method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning the phonetic values of letters, letter groups and syllables. I have a BA in English and a JD. I have used this method with children and adults with varied exercises to learn the sounds starting with simple words and growing the vocabulary. I believe this is the best method to learn English and develop good reading and comprehension skills.

ESL/ESOL
