Hello! My name is Monique. My major is Mathematics--Middle School Extension. Teaching has been my passion for approximately twelve years. Good teaching is as much about passion as it is about reason. It’s about not only motivating students to learn, but also teaching them how to learn, and doing so in a manner that is relevant, meaningful, and memorable. It’s about caring for your craft, having a passion for it, and conveying that passion to everyone, most importantly to your students.
I want to teach mathematics because mathematics is my favorite subject. I get a sense of accomplishment when I solve mathematical problems. I have some experience tutoring my peers. I enjoy tutoring my peers in mathematics because it gives me great joy and a feeling of fulfillment to make a difference, more so, when my peers comprehend and show their appreciation and improve their mathematical average. I also benefit by helping my peers because my mathematical skills also improve.
When I am tutoring someone, I make sure I dissect the mathematical problems into miniature pieces. If the person I am helping does not understand the problem the first time, I will keep on going over the problem until they fully grasp the concept being taught. I like when I teach something and the person understands it clearly. By time I am finished assisting the person, the person should be able to teach the problems back to me, which shows me that they fully understand.
I was recently a Jumpstart Team Leader. Jumpstart is an organization through which I provided individualized attention and positive adult-child relationships to prepare children attending preschool in low-income neighborhoods for school success. I lead lessons twice a week, for 18 weeks. It was one of the best experiences of my life, just to know I made a difference in 30 children.
