As part of her plan for a career in teaching, Kathe completed a 160 hour TESOL certification course at the International Language Institute in Northampton, MA, part of SIT (School for International Teaching). She also participated in a tutor training through the NY State Literacy Program and has worked with students studying for the U.S. Citizenship exam.
Kathe believes that effective learning happens in a safe and relaxed environment where tutor and student communicate openly, each benefiting from the other's experiences. While she has tutored a wide range of ESL students, she especially enjoys working with college students and professionals who wish to perfect their speaking and writing skills.
About ten years ago, after leaving a career as a registered nurse, she started writing non-fiction and has published two memoirs. During that time, she has done copy editing for other fiction and non-fiction writers. She is currently writing an adventure novel set in Mexico.
Having studied Spanish for several years while living in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, Kathe understands the challenges people face learning another language and living in a different culture. She knows the importance of having an empathetic and patient teacher, and that is what she strives to be.
