Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As a teacher in a private college preparatory school, I have helped many students gain admission to leading colleges and university. I offer guidance and encouragement as students research the best options for themselves and their families. I also help students develop a timeframe to keep track of the many tasks and deadlines that can make the college application process so stressful. And because I am a writing specialist, students receive supportive and rigorous feedback through all stages of developing, revising, and polishing college essays (there is always more than one) that are distinctive and honest representations of who they are and how their goals and priorities suit the college of their choice.

English

I can help you with all aspects of English, including reading comprehension, understanding and interpreting literature, grammar and punctuation, writing, and oral presentations. I also work with second language speakers on oral comprehension and conversation.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with non-native speakers of English of all ages in a wide variety of contexts. I can help you practice your conversation skills, improve your grammar, and develop your vocabulary. I can also help you polish your writing so that you can express your ideas in clear and graceful English, even in advanced and technical subject areas.

Reading

I work together with students to develop the right reading techniques that suit their individual learning styles in order to increase their comprehension, efficiency, and enjoyment in the reading experience.

SAT Reading

I will work with you to develop effective strategies for processing the SAT reading comprehension passages efficiently, focusing on the specific areas on which the questions are directed.

SAT Writing

Having worked as a grader of SAT writing sample essays, I have an especially strong insight into how the essays are evaluated and what the readers are looking for. I can help you strategize effective ways to respond to the SAT writing prompt and develop simple, reliable structures for organizing your essay. We will also review your sentence and paragraph skills and consider the best ways to increase your focus and reduce your stress during the SAT test itself.

Study Skills

I have a lot of experience supporting and encouraging secondary and post-secondary as they work to become more effective students. Among the areas in which I can help you are time management, organization, conceiving of tasks as a set of achievable goals, and motivation. Together, we will identify your strengths and interests and develop strategies for using these strengths and interests to build your skills. I can also provide support in research and writing for large scale projects.

TOEFL

I have helped non-native English speakers with all aspects of speaking, reading, and writing, working with students of all ages and levels, studying a wide range of subjects. Together, we will develop the right program for your needs to improve your skills and build your confidence as an English speaker.

Writing

As a highly experienced writing teacher with a strong understanding of the range of issues students face with writing, I combine a supportive approach with high standards of verbal communication. I work with students on every aspect of the writing process for all kinds of writing assignments. This might include brainstorming topics, developing and supporting a thesis, structuring effective paragraphs, strategizing revisions, and editing for a writing style that enables students to express themselves clearly and gracefully. Every student has something to say, and I make sure that each one is able to do so effectively and independently.
