Social Studies

Social Studies is a broad subject that encompasses various disciplines from the social sciences. Students are expected to master an understanding of history, government and politics, economics, geography and sociology to name a few. The NYS social studies curriculum focuses on both Global and US history, and is designed to use the study of history to explain the complexities of life in the present.

The purpose of a social studies education is to raise civic awareness among students. There are also a number of valuable skills that learning social studies requires students to master. Students are asked to use critical thinking in the social studies classroom rather than simply regurgitate facts. Literacy skills are also inextricably linked to social studies, as students are continuously required to improve their reading and writing. Ultimately, a social studies education prepares students for both academic life in college, and the real world they will face after graduation.

As a recently certified NYS social studies teacher, my experience teaching social studies has been during my 15 weeks of student teaching. During this time, I had the opportunity to teach 9th grade Global History and Geography, 11th grade US History and 12th grade Government. I have also recently tutored 2 students in both Global and US History, helping them to successfully pass their Regents exams.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
