Hello!

I not only help you achieve mastery over subject matter, I assist you in becoming a more effective learner. Time management, reading and writing skills, and critical thinking approaches are embedded in our sessions together. I can help you perform in class like never before!

I have an undergraduate degree in Economics from the rigorous Smith College in Massachusetts, and work experience in business, research and quantitative methods. I can help you with theory and math from the high school to the undergraduate level. Economics is a wandering discipline, and what you may have thought had nothing to do with economics, most likely it does! So if you need help in: political economy, political philosophy, government/public policy, or just plain old micro and macro theory, I'm your economist!

I have experience as an economics tutor working in Monroe Community College's tutoring department for one year. I now tutor privately, at whatever place and time is convenient for you.

I like to tell stories, make analogies and give tons of examples to illuminate the concepts and create relationships between real life problems and abstract theory. I can make do with a simple sheet of paper and a pencil; no need for fancy equipment! All learning comes from talking it through.

I am patient, comfortable to be with, and will embrace your individual learning style and preferences. I do my utmost to create a relaxed learning environment. Looking forward to working with you,

Kate

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have a strong background in micro-economics, and I have also spent a year in the field, working for a start-up agency in the sustainability field. I have been exposed to, and often in charge of, sales projections and forecasts, building profit and loss sheets, writing business plans, etc.; I also have proficiency in Microsoft Excel, and statistical training.

Literature

I am an avid reader; literature expands your appreciation and understanding of the human condition! My main focus has been: Victorian novels; the Russian novel (especially Tolstoy); Religion and Spirituality in Fantasy literature (esp. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien); the Philosophical novel (i.e. Camus, Ayn Rand, Nietzsche); and Feminist Writers and their Works (Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Virginia Woolf, Simone de Beauvoir, etc.)

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for many years, two at the university level. I have also spent a cumulative 5 weeks in Spanish-speaking countries (Spain and Peru). I have excellent grammar, writing and speaking skills.
