College Counseling

I have a Master of Arts degree in English. In my 30+ years of teaching, I worked with adults and 12th graders on writing essays and research papers. I have helped my own children write essays for their college applications. I feel confident that I can help a student write a succinct essay for his college application.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am permanently certified to teach reading K-12 in New York State. I have taught reading to students in grades K-6 full-time over the past six years until I retired from full-time teaching. Presently I am teaching reading/writing in two after-school programs in grades 2, 3, and 4 in inner-city Rochester.

Phonics

I am certified permanently to teach Reading K-12 in New York State. I studied phonics in my coursework to get reading certification. I have taught elementary and secondary students using the Wilson Reading Program, which is a phonics-based program. In the last four years of my full-time teaching career, I taught remedial reading to students K-2 and taught a great deal of phonics.

Proofreading

In the past, I have worked in publishing as a proofreader and copy editor. I am familiar with different style manuals and can help a writer adhere to the requirements of a specific style manual. I also worked as a remedial reading/writing and English teacher; I worked with students on all phases of the writing process. I taught grammar, usage, and mechanics to students of all levels and am a very accurate proofreader.

Regents

I am permanently certified in New York State to teach English 7-12. I also have a Master of Arts degree in English from Loyola University (Chicago). During my career of 30+ years as a reading/English teacher, I have taught English 7, 8, and 10 at Manchester-Shortsville Central School District. For my first 17 years of teaching I primarily worked with high school and middle school students.

SAT Reading

I am permanently certified to teach English 7-12 and Reading K-12 in New York State. In my 30+ years of teaching, I worked with students individually or in small groups as an Academic Intervention Specialist. I also taught English 10. I taught study skills, such as test-taking, test preparation, critical reading, and essay writing. I also focused on reading in the content area.

I worked in publishing before becoming a teacher; I am an experienced editor and proofreader, which helps me when I teach writing.
