I enjoy teaching and working with students of all ages. I feel that my tutoring sessions should provide more than support with subject material.
Students will build confidence in their learning as well as a greater desire to excel when working with me. I have many years of experience teaching in public and private schools as well as working with students individually. I enjoy students of all backgrounds and nationalities. While living in Ohio I encouraged many students who were learning English as a second language. I found that experience to be very rewarding. I am a teacher who enjoys learning from her students as well.
My sessions are interactive and not the traditional focus on learning from a textbook or worksheets. My love of learning and teaching has benefited many students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I am familiar with diagnostic tests which college planning centers use for their clients. I worked as an assistant for Dollars for College in the Fair Oaks area helping students write college essays and narrow their choices for college application. I have gone through the application process with my own daughter who is a freshman at UC San Diego.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience tutoring elementary age students. I currently work with a 4th grade boy in writing and reading skills over the summer. I have my masters degree in education and many years experience teaching students of all ages. This past year my tutoring experience was primarily with students 1st-5th grade.

English

I have taught middle school language arts and high school English. I have certification from New York State to teach English grades 6-12. I also have training in teaching English as a second language. While living in Columbus, Ohio I worked for Berlitz International teaching English to adults who worked for various companies.

Flute

I played flute in high school and college.
I have played in ensembles and also played at the grade 6 level. I own an Artley flute which I recently had reconditioned. I enjoy the instrument, and feel qualified to teach at the beginning to intermediate level.

French

I have taught French at the High School and College level for many years. I have a BA degree in French from Sweet Briar College and participated in the Junior Year in France program. I have taken many advanced courses in French as well. I have organized student study abroad programs in France for travel and language enrichment. I enjoy speaking French and attend classes at the Sacramento Alliance francaise. J'adore tout ce qui est francais!

Handwriting

I have experience teaching cursive writing at the first and second grade level. I taught language arts, and have tutored students in early composition which requires handwriting. I have materials and the guides as to how the upper case and lower case letters are formed for writing. I feel competent to be able to tutor students in how to improve their handwriting and make improvements for legibility.

Public Speaking

I have been a classroom teacher for many years. I also coached a speech and debate team. I have assisted students with their speeches for graduation as well as for oratory contests. I can tutor someone who is preparing for the experience of public speaking either for a class or for a competition.
Teaching, in my opinion, has been the most influential experience for public speaking.

Reading

I am familiar with the Common Core Standards for reading programs in California. I currently tutor students who attend Elementary Schools in Folsom and Granite Bay.

I feel that I am able to bring a lot of teaching experience in Language Arts and English to the younger learners in the area schools. I enjoy coaching them to improve their skills.

SAT Reading

Many of my students have been able to increase their scores in Reading and Writing on the SAT examinations. I set high goals for my students, and work with them on test taking methods as well. I find my coaching to be rewarding and satisfying.

Spanish

I have taken 24 units of college Spanish and have traveled extensively in Spain. I taught Middle School Spanish for 3 years. I have tutored students in Spanish level 1.

Study Skills

I have coached students through the SOAR study skills program developed by Susan Kruger. I have also worked with many students helping them with organizing their planners and developing a daily structure for study skills and time management. Many high school students have benefited from my assistance in organizational skills. I have many years of experience teaching in public and private schools as well as working with students individually.
