My name is Lauren, and as a passionate educator of all ages and various subjects, I would be thrilled to support you in your learning needs! I am a seasoned educator with seven years of combined experience teaching and coaching in bilingual early elementary and middle school settings across New York City. I have taught hundreds of children reading, writing, grammar, math, social studies, science, and dance in both English and Spanish. I also have professional experience teaching adults (Spanish, ESL, and Salsa dancing) in Arizona, Washington, D.C., and here in New York City.
I believe in the importance of assessment as a driver of instruction. With this in mind, I will design a curriculum that matches your skills and abilities with aligned assessments that give you the opportunity to demonstrate to yourself that you have mastered the content that we have covered! No wishy-washy, "I feel as though I have learned something." Instead, I will show you your progress as measured by the assessments you complete on a periodic basis. You will be amazed at how much you learn and grow over our time together!
A few other notes about me: I am a native English and Spanish speaker—my mother is from the Dominican Republic and my father is Irish-American. I believe that fluency in two or more languages is an incredible asset, which is why I am so passionate about teaching languages. In addition, I am First Aid and CPR-certified, and as proven by my experience in schools, am excellent in crisis management. As a current graduate student in Counseling Psychology at Columbia Teachers College, I am learning the art of conflict resolution, the importance of clear communication, and the value of self-awareness.

I received my New York State Teaching Certificate with a Bilingual Extension (Spanish/English) in 2008. I am certified to teach Grades 1-6 in monolingual (English) and bilingual (English/Spanish) settings. I received my Master of Science in Teaching from Pace University in 2008. In addition, I have worked as an instructional coach (2011-2013) in a middle school setting, coaching teachers who worked with 6th graders in Math and ELA/ESL. Finally, I have developed curriculum in phonics and writing for emergent readers in English and Spanish, as well as in 6th grade ELA and Math.
With my tutoring clients, I craft student-specific curricula based on that particular student's needs in the subject area of focus, most commonly: Spanish, English as a Second Language, English Language Arts (reading/writing/phonics), and Math (grades 1-6). I utilize pre-, post-, and benchmark assessments to determine students' initial abilities, to track ongoing progress, and to measure ultimate gains throughout the course of the tutoring relationship.
As an elementary school teacher, I taught phonics embedded in reading and writing instruction in both English and Spanish to my students. I predominantly utilized two phonics programs called Fundations (English) and Estrellita (Spanish). In addition, as a middle school instructional coach, I supported 6th grade ESL teachers as they taught recent immigrant students basic English skills. I currently also craft my own phonics activities and programs for students that I tutor based on their specific abilities and needs.
Having taught elementary and middle school age children for the past seven years, study skills have been incorporated in my overall instruction. Not only have I assigned homework to students, but I have also taught students how to study. Study skills I have focused on include, but are not limited to: Time management, personal and academic organization, prioritization skills, working with families to support basic study habits (finding a quiet, comfortable place to work, avoiding distractions like television, getting adequate rest, maintaining a healthy diet to fuel energy and brain activity, etc.) I have also worked with various students and special education teams to craft individualized education plans that meet students' specific learning needs.
