I have taught American History for at least 10 years at the Regents level and at the Advanced Placement level. The course curriculum covers the colonial era through the present. We place strong emphasis on turning points in American history, such as, The Revolutionary era, the foundation, the development of the constitution, early foreign policy, manifest destiny, reform movements, America's involvement in both World Wars, the Cold War and the war on terror. Students will receive ample practice in analyzing primary source documents, in organizing their ideas and in writing essays.
For the past fifteen years, I have prepared students from 9-12th grades to excel on their NY State Social Studies exams. They need to pass a Global History and an American History exam in order to qualify for a High School Diploma. Some students struggled to pass these exams due to the concepts, the themes, the vocabulary they have to master to perform well. During tutoring sessions, I will use primary and secondary source documents to read, dissect, and comprehend. Maps, political cartoons, timelines will be used as visual aids to better locate the civilizations, the physical features of a particular region, cultures and values.
While in college, I minored in World History or Global History. In my 15yr teaching career, I've taught and prepared students to pass their Regents exam in Global History and Geography and have received multiple commendations for my teaching style and strategy. I am very familiar with what New York State requires students to know to excel on the test including the topics that usually come up on the essay portion of the exam.
Since I majored in Political Science and History while in college, my professors frequently assigned papers to research and topics to write about. Therefore, I acquired plenty of experience in organizing my ideas to present, and to structure my essays to meet the criteria demanded. In the course of my career, I've read and scored hundreds of essays submitted by my students. To help familiarize them with various writing styles, I gave them feedback on their paper and would allow them to rewrite the piece based on the recommendations given.
